Description 18x24" 45x60 cm acrylic on hardboard

Another lonely road this week. I used three different brushes on this one, a smallish round one for the foreground, my more usual big flat one for the sky, and a little one for the branches. I often use just one brush for the whole painting, mostly out of sheer laziness. I had a dark band of pine trees above the bank, but decided it was too clunky, so I changed it to a grey, leafless forest, and then just eliminated it all together. What remains is more stark and lonely which I think conveys a bit more of the chill of winter. (I hate the middle ground anyways -- I just stick with the foreground and a distant background.) Other than that, my main interest was painting what I've observed; that the shadows in the snow are not the same color as the sky, though maybe if you looked straight up they'd match. Haven't done that yet.

Hello old friend and i hope you had a great holiday season!  LOL this since down here in South Texas snow is rarer than Black rain!  I find snowscapes inviting,  Something new to explore like your paintings, of course i haven't forgotten my Army days in Virginia, Snows only fun when you don't have to SHOVEL IT!  Ha!

Great to hear from you again. It's been a while since I've posted anything (or painted anything). Hope you and the family are well. We've had little more than a 2-3" of so so far around here so far, which is great. Cold, but then, I just stay inside.. In short, not a bad winter, so far...

It rained all of last week and right after Christmas,  Freezing wet and drizzle,  aggravated my arthritis but i got those thermal gloves with battery-powered heat inside!  Good stuff!   Fortunatly we didn't iceover except in higher elevated places like Elevated Highways and up in the Hill Country,  We got sunshine as of today and i'm hoping it last, but my Sunday off was ruined,  Dallas Cowboys lost. (If your a Green Bay Packer fan,  I don't like you. (I'm kidding! )  C'ya!

Sorry, I thought he caught it. I only ended up watching the game because we got invited to a friend's house to do so, otherwise I don't bother -- there's just too many damn commercials... and in the end, everyone ends up a loser except one team, and you forget who they are in a month.

I thought Dez caught it too untill they showed the replays from different angles,  Damn the fates!!  Football seasons just about over though,  i haven't been able to watch much,  way too busy these days cause of my new profession as Property Inspector,  though i'm less busy now during the winter than during the Spring and Summer!  This jobs making me try to book like i'm 25 again!  Sheesh!

Ha! I DON'T need the help,  It might do good for my body but Our Children do more for my mind(and my patience)in keeping us active against our choice!(sigh.)

The grand kids -- only two --  were around over the holidays. Hard to believe we did that 24/7/365 for all those years. Stay young.

Thanks Larry. I originally painted it with the smaller brush, but it looked too stiff. The big flat brush worked better. I usually try to keep clouds as vague as possible. Imply them more than anything, and use visible brush strokes to suggest movement. It doesn't make for a realistic sky, but then, what is in my paintings?

Thanks, though it can be taken in in a second or two. It works if you feel cold for that second or two.

Definitely feels like the chills of winter....but it also has a lovely brightness that gives it the lovely feeling of a bright ,crisp, winters day!!!

Good. Feeling cold is all that's here. You can paint winter pretty cozy, but this time around it was only winter's knife edge.
