Description My god I'm so in love with this piece. It's the first one that I've felt fully proud of as far as water colors go.

I have Aishiyaarts to thank for this, whom I shall now forever refer to as senpai. (www.youtube.com/channel/UCV4Nr… ) Senpai is an amazing Russian watercolor artist and watching her simple but surprisingly complex portraits come to life on her youtube channel has significantly inspired me, and to some respect I would like to begin emulating her style until I am more confident in my own.

Because the paper was severely warped by the water (I bought my water color pages from the kid's section at Michael's because it was like 40 pages for $5-8, and it seemed like a better deal at the time than $40 for like, 15 pages from the 'adult' section.), even though I TAPED IT DOWN, the scanner had a difficult time picking up everything. In fact, part of the upper part of her head and the square are blurred. The colors are less vivid than the RL piece, too. FML.

I would like tips on how to keep the water color paper from warping... and general advice on how I should proceed from here, and like, the biggest things you guys think I can begin improving upon.

Hi! I'm from and I'm here to post a critique on you artwork.

I really like the pastelly color palette you used for this watercolor work.
I think you did generally a great job: the color looks nicely blended and smooth just as it's supposed to look. It's not muddy (i struggle with muddy watercolor a lot lol) which is also great, especially if you#re just starting out. ^^
I also like the details in the hair and the differently colored strands. ^^
One thing to work on would be the details in the face and the hand: I think you should push the contrast a liittle bit more to make these features stand out (it's also quite hard to tell where the face begins and where the cigarette ends...)
you could also add a lineart if you'd like too, this would solve this problem too ^^
The clothes are painted very loosely, which works really well for this kind of shirt. It makes it look really loose.  This technique doesn't work with all kinds of fabrik, so keep this in mind ^^

I'd really advise you to buy more expensive watercolor paper. While this may be great for experimenting, you will not be able to create great artwork on it. It's probably way too thin and too light, which is the reason why it warps. Your paper should weight at least around 300g/m²...
Another reason why it may warp could be using too much water (though I don't think this was your problem here).
You could try to smooth the paper out again by putting some heavy books on top of it and wait for sme days...this helps sometimes.

All in all, this is a really nice painting and you're making great progress so far.
Keep it up!

I recently bought a watercolir sketchbook from the adult department of Michael's and yeah, the paper is making a HUGE difference!! It seems to dry quicker and it only starts to warp if the paper is needlessly drenched.

Thank you for your kind encouragement and commentary!!

I'm glad I could help :3

Yeah, the paper really does make a difference 😁
I also found out that I prefer working with hot pressed watercolorpaper, rather than rough or cold pressed because it has a smooth finish which I really like...
You could try these kind of paper out too :3

Hi there from ProjectComment

Wow, this picture immediately caught my attenation when I was going through the thumbnails. Although the composition of this painting is rather simple, it draws a lot of power from that simplicity, because you manage tell a story with a few brush strokes. So there's this woman smoking a cigarette, she's scantily clad with a shirt and you start to think what she was doing right before she lit the cigarette. Well, that's left to the viewer's imagination. But actually this picture can be used for a tabacco producte advertisement. A limited color palette (here: red and blue tones) helps to create an harmonic atmosphere. The rectangle in the background is a nice touch and balances well with the colors of the picture. Although the picture looks somewhat blurry in some regions it does not diminish the quality of your painting. Overall, you did a very nice job!

Cheers!

LVOE
honestly, if this photo was of me or someone i loved it would be going up in my house so freaking fast, this is some great work
the colors are just so beautiful
and even though it is blurry, it goes with the vibe, and you can see the expressions on their face and feel the emotion in this artwork as well,
if I had to say something to add maybe smoke from the cig,
or even another background element on the top left, due to its a white space, but that is a nit pick as much as I could think of, because I honestly LOVE THIS BEAUTIFUL ART PIECE

Awwww thank you so much!!!

The pencil sketch had smoke escaping from hrr lips; but I was still very uncomfortable with watercolors (still am!) that I felt I could not make it happen😁

Thank you so much for kind, encouraging words!!

If you soak your paper and then tape it down before it dries, that can prevent warping. It is called stretching paper. It can be difficult; so you might want to look it up. Keep up the good work! 😊

I tried this once!! It was a hilarious lesson in futility. I used an empty bottle of oxy clean to squirt the paper down w water, then desperately tried to tape it to a cutting board... but apparently the rough pattern of the cutting board and the wetness combined made the tape not work!!

So far clipping stuff onto my cutting board is returning best results; it warps if I get heavy handed w water but when it dries, it dries straight. I will try wetting it before clipping it next time!

I use water activated tape and sometimes staples on a piece of polyurethane coated plywood, but it can still ne a disaster. The other thing you can try is misting the back of a warped painting and then putting it under something heavy to flatten it out.

I was actually thinking of something similar! I was going to get a cheap clothing iron and steam it back down but you know just mistingbamd usingba book sounds way easier x)
