The first thing that strikes me with this image is the colour and tone. The restriction of the colour palette had made for an intriguing development of variance in the tone. The variance of the blue hues, underscored with the traces of yellow on the right balance the image quite well, softening the impression of the heavy background shadow. However, the line of the wine glass, due to the point of focus, trails into a dull grey hue which detracts from the overall tone as the line presented here is the centre point of the image. As a counter balance to this, the choice of focal point has brought into the photo the subtle tones and hues otherwise overlooked. An example here being the thin trace of pink lining the lip of the water. I find though my eye is continually drawn to the grey hue of the glass, the combination of composition tones chosen has really pronounced this here. This can be altered by the experimentation of focal points and lighting. For the image presented a crisp and definitive line of the glass would go a long way in really pronouncing the image to viewer.

Despite this the use of shape and line within the photo has been finely tuned to match the tones portrayed. The spherical bubbles are complimented by the sweeping lines from left to right, dragging the eye across the image. The effect of the bubbles though is to attract the eye to linger upon and further trace its way up the photo. The dominance of liquid line may have domineered the image with a darker or brighter background, but the balance of light is quite well proportioned for the composition. The only detracting factor is the line of the background. The lack of cohesive line in the background tends to bore the eye quickly prompting it to return to the focal line of the image. The colours used here were well chosen, the yellow working well to draw attention around the image, Picasso used this technique in several of his portraits from the Blue period, however, the definition and clarity of the colour in the background can have as much of an impact as the focus point. With the backdrop here, I would have most likely used the same tone and colour, but have a clearer definition in the line. This can be again reworked and experimented with by realigning the distance from the background that you take the photo. However, this is only a minor factor of the overall image which is quite succinctly composed. The use of borders and framing is also another aspect that can be looked at. The framing of an image can increase its impact and finesse if balanced correctly. It takes some time to shift through the various style of frames you can create, but generally a simple border that you feel comfortable with can really enhance an image.

On pure photographic technique, the focus and lighting used is subtle and impressive. It takes patience and skill to be able to capture, with clarity, movement and expression in otherwise inanimate objects. Here however, the job has been well executed and it expresses well a finesse and calm nature. AS a depiction of water as an element, it is an un-conventional photo in that most people would try and capture the power and the strength of water whereas here, there is far more subtlety and grace involved. It is a good depiction of the concept and the use of colour, most prominently, has certainly developed that cool and relaxing imagery.

My personal response to this photo is one of simple calm and passion. I find that it reminds me of sipping upon fine liquor, or relaxing in a cool embrace. The background gives me the impression of Chinese wall decorations and I could picture this image being taken from the scene of a secretive art group in a classical gallery. Overall a serene and well executed photo.
