I think that's your perception of what's in character for him. Given that their actual characters in the movie were about as complex as cardboard and just as deep, he's pretty much a blank canvas.

I don't think that's true. They may not have had a lot of dialogue or interactions, but their characters were actually quite deep. You just have to pay closer attention to them than you would in an average movie.

Again, that is a matter of opinion. I liked the movie, but I can't deny that it was poorly constructed, the characters were one dimensional, only two of them were given any kind of development and character arch, and as a whole it was considered a flop of a movie. It's why it did so poorly in theaters and the majority of people who went to see it, didn't like it. It did not make it's budget back, numbers don't lie. As a graduate of film school, I know why it failed, it's clear as day. But as a piece of art, I like the movie. The reason the fandom thinks this movie is "deep" is because THEY gave the characters more personality than the movie itself did.

I'm not denying that the film was a flop. On the contrary. I too am interested in film, and fully understand all the parts that went wrong with the movie. I just take it as what it is, an original and captivating work of art that simply fell short of its potential. They could have put in so much more character development, interactions, backstory, and the plot could use a good tweaking --I actually thought the alternate ending was a better choice than the one they went with.--.
But the thing that I enjoy about the movie, and probably the reason the fandom is so vibrant, is that there is so much left unsaid to analyze. The small and subtle interactions between the characters can speak very loudly. On the forums there are entire threads devoted to discuss and analyze each of the characters to their full potential.
Yes, there is a lot of speculation going on in the fandom. And sure, we probably push the boundaries a little of what there is to understand, but all of it is based on observations.
Example.
Observation-In 2's burial scene, 5 puts 1's coin over 2's eyes.
Wondering-How did 5 get the coin?
Speculation-1 might have given the coin to 5 as his way of paying his respects to 2.
Continuing on that theory- Because of 1's character, that was the only way he could allow himself to do it. It was probably a combination of, he's finally accepting what he's done/he didn't deserve to be down there with them, because that's what he does. He constantly punishes himself, even when he's not the cause, because even if it's someone else's decision completely, he will always feel responsible for everything bad that happens to the group. He is in more internal distress than he lets on, which is why he spends a lot of time to himself, and why he had to watch from afar. Because he can't mourn the same way that everyone else does. He has to go through things alone.
/Went a bit overboard/
Anyway, yeah. That's how it works. And there have been some really awesome discussions from it.
And when we draw/write the stereotypical stuff that makes 9 a noob 1 a pope, 2 a pedo, etc., it's just for fun, and we all are able to talk about the character seriously when the discussion calls for it.
I Mean, maybe it's not even that they weren't given a complex personality because the writers kinda sucked, but their characters just /were/ that simple and stereotypical, given what they were. pieces of a whole. There are SO many theories and SUCH subtle evidence that things can be interpreted SO diversely throughout the fandom, and all of them could be right. The fandom is BUILT on this.
So anyway, when people mention of things being uncharacteristic, they mean the widely considered characters that are based off of consistent observations throughout the movie. I agree that a lot of this is opinion. I have made some opinions in this comment itself. But what I don't agree with is just calling it blank, which means you can make it whatever the heck you want. That is an opinion as well.

You don't agree with calling it blank, yet the majority of your comment was simply speculation on different characters. In fact it's exactly what you and the entire fandom have done. You've taken the blank canvas the movie gave us and painted on it.
I agree with you, the movie is a fantastic piece of art. It's a bad movie, but it had the potential to be a GOOD story and it fell very short of that. But for the people like you and me who saw it as a starting point for something more, it turned into a canvas that needed to be built upon. The observations you made were cliche stereotypical character points that pretty much every movie has. You just took liberties to make them more than what the movie said they were.
We're pretty much in agreement here, the only difference is of opinion. You gave the movie more credit and I didn't. The fact that you're on the forums discussing these things and I write stories with JJ proves that even though the movie gave us so little, we took SOMETHING out of it and made it entertaining. That's why this movie is now considered a cult film. It doesn't have a very large following but the following it DOES have close knit and passionate. That's all I'm saying. Bad movie, but a decent starting point.
9's character was cliche and over done. Infact his voice actor played the same character in other films that managed to do it right. I'm not bashing the characters or the movie, I'm simply stating a fact. It doesn't stop me from drawing them, does it?
Your comment about my comment towards Clue is simply the same thing I said to her. That 'uncharacteristic' is left open to interpretation.

Why do I love 9's expression so much? WHY?
This is so adorable! I love your human renditions, they seem to fit the characters so well.
