Description Workflow: DAZ Studio Pro 4.8.0.55 (final release), Iray render. Photoshop for a little postwork.

Monique 6 (with some dialed morphs and a hint of a smile on her face) and the new 'Big Afro Hair for G1 and G2' by Hellboy ( www.daz3d.com/big-afro-hair-fo…). For the skin I used the default G2F Iray optimized shader included in DS 4.8 and the hair was also converted to the standard Iray Uber Base shader, included in DS 4.8. The lighting and the camera (with D.O.F. effect) are from 'DAZ Studio Iray HDR Outdoor Environments' ( www.daz3d.com/daz-studio-iray-…). Little tonal, color and contrast corrections in Photoshop, and a very subtle soft focus filter added, as well.
It's my first close-up portrait done in Iray, so the result is not extraordinary, but I think it's acceptable. Anyway, I hope you like it !

PS: The rendering (GPU and OptiX Prime Acceleration enabled) went very slowly, much slower than my previous car renderings (I suppose because of the Big Afro Hair), and stopped prematurely at only approx. 250 iterations and probably around 70% degree of convergence for I forgot to change the default rendering time settings, so the rendering was stopped automaticly after the elapse of the 2 presetted hours (7200 sec). However, with the 'old' Reality 4.0/LuxRender 1.4, for such a scene I barely get half that s/p (or even less) in the same rendering time, so the switching to Iray is a progress, anyway !
Now it's clear that I have to replace my old GeForce GTX 560 Ti with at least a GTX 760 (because, sadely, I have no money for a GTX 980 or a GTX Titan).

Thank you ! I like too how the shape of the hair came out, but the hair material/shader could be better.
Anyway, a friend who saw this render innocently asked me "that thing on her head is coiled wire ?!..."

Looks great, the skin is very realistic.  I usually have to tweak other characters to get them this realistic, but I own a lot of older stuff... maybe Monique and the newer ones are more Iray-ready?

Congrats, nice work.

Thank you for the kind words !
Yes, the merit is entirely of the product (Monique) which came with a very detailed skin. Then I only apply the standard 'Iray Optimized G2F' shader, included with DS 4.8. No extra tweaking at all.

She is gorgeous, and that hair is great!! You like working with Iray i guess? Did you had to learn a lot, or is it easy to do?

Livius70 In reply to Ikke46 [2015-06-01 13:16:47 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I have to learn a little about the Iray shader types and tweak a litttle with their settings in the 'Surfaces (color)' tab of DS, as they are totally different from the Reality/LuxRender ones. And with the render settings, especially those in the 'Environment' tab. But nothing that can't be done in a resonably amount of time. The big plus of Iray, at least for me, is the greater rendering speed over Reality/LuxRender, not necessarily the render quality which is comparable. And, yes, you can make a good 'Car Paint' type shader much easier in Iray than in Reality/LuxRender, and that is an absolute advantage for car renderings.

Will you use Iray more in the future, then Reality? Paolo said that with the newer Reality , the renderspeed would be much quicker...

Livius70 In reply to Ikke46 [2015-06-01 15:05:20 +0000 UTC]

If the up-coming Reality 4.1 & LuxRender 1.5 will keep its promises about the increasing rendering speed (up to 7x - 10x, Paolo said), I probably going to work again with LuxRender from time to time. What I particularly like about LuxRender is its ability to stop and resume anytime later a rendering and the ability to modify the 'Tone Mapping' settings and apply and adjust different lens effects (as 'bloom', 'vignette' etc) on the fly. What I don't like about Reality/LuxRender combo it's that it isn't really integrated into DS interface but you must deal with 3 different programs, each with its own interface, and you must tweak your settings for materials/shaders, lights etc in DS, then again in Reality and finaly tweak some more settings in LuxRender (Lights group gain/intensity and color, Tone Mapping etc). It's a tedious and very time consuming process. Leaving aside the possibility that at any time one of the three mentioned piece of software can give a splendid crash and you gonna have to take it from the beginning again.

Anyway, unfortunately for him, I think the game is lost for Paolo because from now on any product that will be released for sale on DAZ3D Shop will include shaders optimized for Iray, not for LuxRender. In addition to this, Iray is free and perfectly integrated into DS, so any new customer can render a photorealistic image using only DS, not a third-party plug-in (Reality) and an external renderer (LuxRender). DAZ Studio 4.8 has now become a complete solution that includes two perfectly integrated rendering engines: 3Delight for those with less powerful PCs and who don't really care about photorealism, and Iray for the others with PCs packed with potent NVIDIA GPUs and who strive for very photorealistic results. Because of the competition with DAZ Studio and Iray, Paolo is forced to release for free his Reality 4.1 up-date. But to keep up with DAZ in the future and to be able to seize new customers, Paolo should give for free all his Reality plug-in versions from now on. And then where would be his financially gain ?

I was hoping for not, but i think you made a point; i think that Iray will become bigger and bigger...And more and more people will walk over to Iray, instead of using Reality further...I still love to work with Reality, and still learn more and more. But also beacouse my computer is old and surely has not enough power to do more then i do now But in de future, when i have a new one, i want to learn how to work with Iray to, because i like what i see,If i will quit working with Reality then? I am not sure now...Time will tell

Livius70 In reply to ibelwang [2015-06-01 13:19:42 +0000 UTC]

This is entirely the merit of 'DAZ Studio Iray HDR Outdoor Environments' product, which came with different camera presets, including some with DOF effect predefined. To my shame, I must admit that until now I have never worked with DOF effect.

This is looking great. Wow. Thats a LOT of hair I render everything on a 660 and its ok speed wise. Obviously bigger is better, but I'd rather put the money to other things right now. Last time I hit a render time that long mind, I hadn't turned the cuda drivers on Do love the HDRi's for lighting - especially the subtle ones. Making a nice stock of them at the moment
Anyways - nicely done
