I really appreciate this. I learn alot just by staring at your works. Thanks for . . . existing lol. Any tips on brushes? Are you making them yourself or do you just happen across them?

Wow thank you so much! Glad you can learn from me I would recommend using a simple brush if you're unsure of how to paint something or if you're studying. "Custom brushes" and textures are great for cutting down work on repetitive work like painting distant leaves or detailing a concrete texture but you should always make sure you're not using them as a crutch for a lack of knowledge.

Almost all of the brushes I use I make myself, the rest are from GPS (Gimp Paint Studio). The brush I use now the most is basically a hard round brush but broken up a bit, mostly on the edges. I find the hard round brush is probably the best one out there but it can often look a bit too clean, breaking up the edges makes it look a bit more natural without taking away from my control. I'm not sure if you use PS or Gimp, but I'll get that uploaded here soon along with the paint dynamics for Gimp 2.7.

You're welcome, of course. Oh, and I'm using Photoshop (CS5). But the rules of brushes are universal so I get what you mean. I'll just stick to playing with hardness and opacity. It's probably best to stick to the default tools since I'm still somewhat of a beginner (maybe not as new as the 2-year old work in my gallery would make it seem, but still . . .)

Even guys like Feng Zhu almost only use the default and very simple stuff though, oh, if you haven't seen Feng's channel I highly recommend it, he does a great series with some really good info [link]

Very neat detailing in those birch trees, the stone and the grass. Great colour palette too.

That's really cool! What brushes did you use for the grass, the leaves, and the texture of the castle (like, the bricks)?

LJFHutch In reply to Neoplayer2 [2011-03-11 13:53:21 +0000 UTC]

Grass brushes are mine, they're in my gallery, the other two (brick and foliage) are also mine but not quite finished yet, though I'll have them up soon. The stone is actually done with a brush I made for painting turbulent ocean

Thanks! You make really great brushes btw haha. I used the water brushes in my newest deviation. Didn't realize they were yours!
