this hit me really hard. and not the way you might think. i work at a humane society (animal shelter). i am reminded i can't save them all (hell even no kill means at least 90% of animals leave alive) but i do forget and so i have to remind myself that the ones we can't save are usually ones that death is the best option health or unchangeable behavior issues being the reason. if any of that makes sense. this poem sums that up quite well.
though i do wish you the best of luck with your friend.

I own MANY dogs and I live in a community where everyone owns at least one. I know all that well, and this piece really does apply to that similarly (if not better).
It really is a good thing to keep in mind, though, that some are better off elsewhere. Even if elsewhere means no afterlife, it's better than suffering on Earth. It's not fair, and no matter how much it hurts, some really do need to be let go. And we have to think for them, not ourselves... (My family recently made the decision to put-down a dog, so this is good timing to comment...)
