Description He's my little buddy

Finally got a good artistic photo of my side arm up here! I was doing this for contest which you can find --> here <-- however I was too late. I still submitted it out of principle though. I was having trouble with glare off the finish of the gun which I was able to help some but it still proved to be an issue. I will keep working on shooting pictures of him so I know I will work it out eventually! If you have any suggestions please let me know bellow! I'm always looking to improve!

Yes! Its my carry gun He is my best friend Nah but I really enjoy this gun. The only bad thing I can say is the sights kind of suck. I need to repaint the front sight actually. I love revolvers. Automatics are kind of ugly to me as they do not obey the rule of thirds like revolvers do hehe.
I named it this because you can read the caliber on the visible part of the cartridge rim When that first happened that you could read it it was unintentional. After that I made sure it was visible lol.
Its just blued steel. You know what blueing is or no?
The wood is just the grips. I have always loved how wood grips look as compared to rubber or some synthetic material. They look real classic! Only down side is you get some funny looks when working security cuz your gun looks old
Very true! It does make it feel personal!
Thank you!

Is the rule of three why you like revolvers?
I do not know what blueing is.what is it?
Looks classy to me
your welcome!

Loffy0 In reply to MangekkoJones [2017-10-04 06:39:52 +0000 UTC]

Yes! as far as looks go anyway. I like them more functionally due to ergonomics, the grip angle, the bore axis (where the bore is in relation to your hand), reliability, the feel of the trigger, and they're more accurate. Only issue is the lower capacity and the reload takes a bit more dexterity but I am getting better with that so that can be trained around i think.
Oh its the finish on the metal, which is technically, just controlled oxidation of the steel in a way that actually strengthens it. If the steel is already oxidized, ti takes more for it to really rust
Haha thanks! I thought so too Most rubber and synthetic grips are ugly to me!

Nice!
That's a very interesting chemical tidbit
kinda makes sense, is there any other applications for it?
why are they ugly?

Hehe yeah! I actually just about a year ago realized I had no idea what blueing did to steel and needed to look it up lol.
Well I guess if you have anything made of bare steel (it does not work with stainless steel for obvious reasons lol) in theory you could blue it to protect it. Only issue with blueing is it will still rust if it gets noticeably wet, and you have to keep it somewhat oiled to maintain the rust resistant properties. Something like a gun you can take care of like that it works for, but some other stuff it may not. Idk if I have ever seen anything else aside from maybe knifes that are blued thinking about it. The other issue is that the chemicals used to blue steel are SUPER toxic lol. So I would prolly wash off any components I ever have to re-blue haha.
They are not as classy and are usually unflattering colors, like more black, or some weird color lol at least to me! Just look up rubber revolver grips and you will see what I mean I have to say though, TheYankeeMarshal, a youtuber I watch, has been getting some pretty cool looking synthetic grips for some of his revolvers, let me link to his instagram! www.instagram.com/theyankeemar…

That's interesting
I can understand why it's not used that much, it's toxic so you wouldn't want that laced accidentally with meat.

Those do look like cool and natural fitting grips

Loffy0 In reply to MangekkoJones [2017-10-05 23:02:05 +0000 UTC]

Lol, just the chemical use to do the blueing. Once you get it off the metal its fine Idk why they dont use it on more stuff though!

Which ones? Just all the new ones he has on his guns?

MangekkoJones In reply to Loffy0 [2017-10-06 04:33:17 +0000 UTC]

maybe the toxicity?

the new ones (I mostly saw those. )

Loffy0 In reply to MangekkoJones [2017-10-08 09:40:44 +0000 UTC]

Maybe but its not like its toxic forever lol. When you wash it off its good! Speaking of which I need to reblue some of my poor gun He is 34 years old and quite worn. Idk if I told you about the time I bought some lead ammo and it got caked with lead, but when I was cleaning that off I damaged the finish on the front of the cylinder

Ah ok hehe. He has a badass gun collection He is super cool too, though he can be ignorant of some things >.< Thanks for checking that out though

Thank you Yeah! Its difficult for me to do an elaborate setup so this was the only other interesting shot I could think of. Despite it being a super simple setup it still look me about four hours to get it right I still don't like how the reflections off the steel are to be honest lol, they are a bit sharp. I appreciate the complements though Also.. what story would that be?
Oh my revolver likes the complements too, he wanted me to say

LindArtz In reply to Loffy0 [2017-10-09 03:08:33 +0000 UTC]

Wow, four hours!   Now That. Is dedication! No wonder your works have gotten so good; the time invested really shows .  Keep up the great work! !!

Well first off. The close proximity lends a certain intimacy to the picture which I like; a certain tension as well.  I suppose the 'story' it tells would depend on the viewer.  For me, first thought, or feeling I should say that it invoked, was that of danger; and impending action.

It's an admirable shot, and a thought provoking one too.  Very good job. !

Loffy0 In reply to LindArtz [2017-10-11 09:23:10 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I mean, how much time do you spend on a manip? When your setting up photography like this with still life, you put a lot more time into it than you would think! Thank you!!

Well put thanks
Hmm it is interesting you say that. The only conscious message I was trying to send with this shot was just the beauty of the firearm itself, and I thought having it loaded made it look much better. The more I think about it though, I was unconsciously presenting it with the feeling of readiness and preparedness. Interesting you would say that as I would not of done the soul searching and realized that Thanks!

Thank you

Wellllll... when I first started I was pumping them out in 45 minutes or so - and trust me they LOOKED it. Terrible!   (thought they were wonderful at the time though and "just as good if not better than any DD".    Ha, NOT!  )
Now it depends really; the fastest is about 4 -8hours (from start to finish) ; but they can also go on for days.  Also, I tend to edit from time to time upon new learning techniques.

I just never realized the time and patience which went into photography.  I can't be arsed beyond 'aim, and shoot'.    Yet.  I have all the patience in the world for manips!  The 'joy' factor I suppose...   If I were to try my hand at photography, find that I liked it, and reap satisfaction and joy from the process, I'm sure I'd then have patience for it too. ^^

Loffy0 In reply to LindArtz [2017-10-20 03:53:33 +0000 UTC]

I can imagine! If your GOOD or reeeaaaallly lucky you can get good photos in 45 minutes or less but that would be like doing a complex still life in only 45 minutes lol. Haha really? I have always known my work is trash Prolly my low self esteem but at least if I am wrong, it turns out to be better than I think instead of worse lol. I understand though its all part of growing as an artist.
Cool

Yeah! It takes a LOT of critical thinking to get a good shot and can be SO frustrating cuz the shit is literally right there in front of you but you can't get it in the camera right haha. I am sure if you put your mind to it you could use your patience with photography too Oh you just said that.. didn't read that far ahead But you got it

SinistrosePhosphate [2017-10-02 01:47:43 +0000 UTC]

Hello! And hello, little buddy!

First things first... I love the disclaimer at the end. That was a very important bit and it left me smiling. We need more responsible gun owners like you!
Now, back to the photo - love the perspective. This one looks like it's damned hard to pull off - the least of which is the glare off of the bullets. Although, I will say, I love that little silver lining on the barrel itself. That was a nice and subtle touch that really worked very nicely. The subdued colour scheme also worked to this photo's advantage, too. So there's definitely merit to this photo, for sure.

Now, how to make this one better?
The first thing that comes to mind is the setting - you might want to consider having the light source behind you instead - that way the light follows the sight of the camera and the engravings on the bullets would show up nicely. Of course, this means you might need a light diffuser, but a white cloth can sometimes do just as well. This photo has a very narrow field of focus, so it's hard to tell this -is- a gun. You might want to consider having something underneath the handle so the gun is titled a little bit. That way we'll see a bit more of the barrel, even if it's out of focus.

I hope this is helpful to you!

Loffy0 In reply to SinistrosePhosphate [2017-10-08 21:01:33 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! The thing is, most gun owners are responsible like me you just hear about the ones who are not I guess it holds true though that we do need more like me because that would either mean more gun owners, or less irresponsible ones even if they are few and far between

It was difficult in part because macro lenses are a bitch to focus lol, but also yeah, I was having problems with glare I think I needed to change the angle of light. Silver lining on the barrel? Wait you mean on the edge of the cylinder right near the cartridge rims? Sorry don't mean t correct you
Yeah I had to fuck with the white balance but like how it came out

Maybe, I was thinking that.. not sure but that may increase glare? However I am unsure. I am using umbrellas so its already diffused to an extent. I want to build some soft boxes though and see how they work out.
Something under the handle? I assume you mean the grip, but that would mean it would tilt the gun so the cylinder is in the way of the barrel. Wouldn't you want to tip the barrel up so you can see the profile of the gun more? At that point I could just change the camera angle.
Either way thank you for you suggestions I will keep them in mind for future shooting! Sorry this took so long to reply to! I am a bit behind and well.. you are wall of text man

It was thanks

SinistrosePhosphate In reply to Loffy0 [2017-10-09 02:15:22 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, exactly. It's unfortunate that most of the time we hear about bad gun owners and we tend to forget that most gun owners are nice and responsible people. But with what happened at Vegas lately, guns are going to be front and centre in the news again. It's never wrong to have some advocacy for more people like you. The more the merrier!

Hey, for someone who doesn't own a gun and haven't taken the course to start getting a licence, I don't mind being corrected. But yeah... it's "that" silver rim. I agree with you, it turned out really nicely. And I believe you about the bit on macro lens, too. I used to work with microscopes. Doesn't get more macro than that! And yes... a definite pain in the... er... it's a pain, period.

Soft boxes would be helpful, for sure. In the meantime, I usually tell people to stretch a white non-reflexive fabric over their light source to work as a diffuser. It also helps to cut down on the glare a bit, too. And yeah, adjusting the angle would be helpful, too. I was thinking of something small under the grip, probably nothing bigger than a vinyl eraser. Anything to give it a little bit of a tilt, you know? But depending on what you have on hand, sometimes just changing the angle of the camera by a couple of degrees or so, you'll get a completely different shot. It's something to think about, that's for sure.

Don't worry about replying late. (And yeah.. I'm definitely the "Wall of Text" guy. I build more walls than Trump! ) My baseline rule is everybody's busy.
But as long as I was able to give you something to think about, that's all that matters!
