Description Took this a few weeks ago when we got a light dusting of snow! If I had only known the tons of snow that would fall in the days to follow haha. I have been trying to get around to editing it all this time and finally was able to! Let me know what you think!

A nice snow cone.Β However, since you've added this for feedback:

I like how the cone is placed in the composition with soft bokeh, but the back is out of focus because you used f/2. If you increased the aperture to f3/f5/f7 it would be entirely sharp. The part of a plant/grass on the left and the green grass could be cloned out, because it distracts me from your subject. A bit of gardening in advance would make the scene clean (minimal) and if you zoomed out you could place it on a line with the rule of thirds showing more of the environment it's in.

Keep up the good work!

Thanks

Hmm thanks, that is a good point. I should of stopped it down to f3 or f4 maybe so it would of been sharper, but if I would of done it any more than that the depth of field would of been deeper than I wanted. I see your point though
I actually liked the bits of green poking through but you give me the idea, of maybe cloning the green into the rest of the snow there, so it wouldn't stand out from everything. I actually cropped it down and tried to go wider but just due to what was there, it didn't look right to me, but that is stuff I'll keep in mind for sure! Same thing with putting it on a rule of thirds line. I agree that would of been optimal but just due to what I had shot, it didn't look quite right from what I remember. Thank you though! All very great ideas!

Much obliged I plan to I have some pictures of my friend's dog, and of his mother's cup cakes to upload

My pleasure.

It's something to try when you're taking shots. Play around with the aperture and take several shots. You might get surprised. I know what you mean: at the moment you take the shots you think it's ok, but when you upload it, it's like damn, I wish i would have used a different setting, composition, POV, or a bit of gardening.

The green isn't rΓ©ally bothering me, because it also adds more of the scene and some contrast with the cone and the snow. Especially the left corner is distracting, imho. It's easy to judge if you don't know what's outside of the frame.Β

Give it a try. I'll add you to my watchlist to check your dog and cupcakes.Β

Have fun!

Loffy0 In reply to VisualStripes [2018-02-06 21:27:03 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, i generally do. I think it was a real dim, cloudy day when i shot this so I was trying to keep the aperture as open as I could at the time. I agree though. Yeah. Its more I think of stuff after the fact that I didnt think of at the time lol. The shot still looks good but I get mad that I didn't do something different

Yeah, I assumed that was why. I agree a little. I dont mind it personally but if the green was more consistent it would of been better.

Thank yoooou I really appreciate that Speaking of which, here comes cupcakes!

You too

VisualStripes In reply to Loffy0 [2018-02-07 08:49:09 +0000 UTC]

With available light it's the trick indeed. You can change the exposure too, to +0.5 / +1, but I wouldn't directly do that with snow.Β  In hindsight it's all so easy...

My pleasure. I'll check them out.

Thanks

Oh you mean with exposure compensation? Yeah!

Thanks!

No problem!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

VisualStripes In reply to Loffy0 [2018-02-08 08:41:06 +0000 UTC]

Yes.Β  If you also shoot in RAW (+ jpeg), you can easily adjust that and still have a copy of the original photo.

Good luck!

Loffy0 In reply to VisualStripes [2018-02-08 08:47:54 +0000 UTC]

Ah ok, I thought you meant on the camera for a moment. I actually only shoot in RAW so that is what I did I didn't want to increase the exposure any more in this one though because yeah, the snow was really overpowering.

VisualStripes In reply to Loffy0 [2018-02-08 09:10:35 +0000 UTC]

In the camera at first for LiveView. Shooting white stuff (light) is tricky, because it can easily get overexposed resulting in blue smudges.

Loffy0 In reply to VisualStripes [2018-02-09 04:25:41 +0000 UTC]

Oh that is a good idea! I never thought of that. I always just take the shot and dont bother doing anything like that but this will keep me from missing ghood shots
Yeah! When I first shot in the snow, I was relying on my metering to set settings and man it freaked out the cameras metering lol.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

VisualStripes In reply to Loffy0 [2018-02-09 08:01:37 +0000 UTC]

No problem. Give it a try.

It's a combination of metering and testing, but I hardly ever look at the metering, because it's blocking the shot. I should though!Β Β

VisualStripes In reply to Loffy0 [2018-02-10 06:51:09 +0000 UTC]

I know....

Yes, on my Olympus the histogram is blocking a small part of the frame at the bottom, so I turned it off. Maybe there are options to change that, but I donΓ½ know my camera that well.

Loffy0 In reply to VisualStripes [2018-02-10 07:35:47 +0000 UTC]

I assumed you know, I was just joking around, sorry

Ah ok that sucks! Have you tried looking it up yet?
I only know Nikons as of right now sorry. I want to try a Fuji some day though! Sorry off topic lol, I wish you luck finding a solution with your camera!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

VisualStripes In reply to Loffy0 [2018-02-10 09:20:42 +0000 UTC]

It depends on what I shoot, but it's bothering me sometimes. For a hovering dragonfly it's turned off, but for a fungus I could turn it on.

I've found it

(I also have two used Panasonics where I can move the histogram on the touchsreen)

Oh nice You can move it around now then? Is there a program button you could assign it to? Like to toggle it?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

VisualStripes In reply to Loffy0 [2018-02-10 10:24:09 +0000 UTC]

Instead of just shooting point-blank it's usefull to read the manual.

If I press the Info button, I have the option the guidelines or the histogram appears or not. Yes!Β Β
