Description     "Practice" always seems to end up with a pony drawing. It's the only thing I can draw reliably off the top of my head I still enjoy drawing ponies every once in a while though!

So this is my first time trying out watercolour since art class in grade 7. Before I started, I took a look around at some watercolour masterpieces and my goodness, they are able to keep such well control over such an uncontrollable medium! There is such a hard balance between finding the paint and water saturation for different situations. Heck, I think I freaked out way too many times going like "ohh my gosh, that's too much! RUUUIIINNNEEDDD!" Ehh, it came out okay anyways xD

Lemme know what you think! I rather enjoyed it! I'll definitely be playing around with it more in the future, especially to learn techniques and such. If you have a fair experience with this medium, please, do give me a shout!

Time Taken: 2 hours
Tools: Robert Simmons Sapphire #8 Round watercolor brush
Paint: Apparently its called "Victorian Windsor Watercolour" but it's just so dated, I couldn't find it anywhere
Paper: Strathmore Mixed Media 400 Series 9x12

The magic aura really seems to get me. I don't know what...something mesmerizing about it.

The aura thing was trial and error I guess it's just the effect that seems charming. You can't exactly get that without using watercolour.

Well, you've done it well, working with the 'magic' of painting, amirite?

I guess to some extent, yeah! XD it's certainly not perfect, but that means there's always improvement happening.

Oh man this looks so pretty! Watercolors always have such a nice charm to them when it comes to shading and vibrancy of color. And of course Luna is best Princess.

Thank youuu! I particularly like the softness you can get with watercolour and you're always in control of how deep you want the colours too. And yes, Luna makes it all better xD

Don't know how you even stood the pressure of ruining everything with only one unfortunate stroke! xD I love ctrl z or at least a goddamn physical eraser! xD

But I guess you were the right one for this tricky task! ;D Great work!

Eventually you get used to it. I'm telling you, my hands used to sweat like mad when I had to ink my drawing!
Well, I think they still do But the point is that you make do with whatever comes your way. Its good to learn this way!

Thank you so much, OPM!
As Bob Ross puts it: "We don't make mistakes, just happy little accidents"
I really like that xD

Oooooooooooooooooo, SWEET!!!!!  I just LOVE watercolours and this beautiful painting is a quintessential example of the kind of wonderful work that is possible with the medium!  Simply beautiful!

Yeah, and one of the coolest things about watercolours (in my never-to-be-humble opinion, anyway) is that they kind of tend to do their own thing, almost like they have a mind of their own.  There's no predicting exactly how they're going to turn out (the Uncertainty Principle in art?  True!)  I once had an art-teacher who expressed it this way:  He called watercolours "inviting the colours onto the paper, where they can all play together."

That's pretty much my experience with it so far xD I was so scared of watercolours because I couldn't control it, and after playing with it, I realized its part of what makes it so enjoyable.

Amazing! I hate watercolors, they're so hard, so why am I not surprised that your first one is amazing...

Ahhh thank you Oddish!! I used to dislike then too. Also because it was hard but it can be fun when you're not fully in control!

I have the same thing with ponies! Whenever I just want to tool around, I always end up doodling a pony, heh.

I didn't used to like watercolors, but in the last few months they've been growing on me as an aesthetic. Mostly just when they still have deep color though, such as in this Luna portrait.

LolliponyArt In reply to starsworne [2017-01-17 01:23:40 +0000 UTC]

I guess it's just become such a habit! A couple years spent drawing ponies makes it a lot easier to do so.

Yeah I'm not too big a fan of bleached looking colours either, though they can be good for some effects. I too prefer my colours a little more potent

starsworne In reply to LolliponyArt [2017-01-18 03:06:35 +0000 UTC]

I agree, ponies are the one 'form' that is/was really easy for me to visualize compared to others, so they're easy subjects when I just feel like getting something out on the "page". Although, I just spent a year only drawing once or twice a month and now everything is about the same difficulty again it seems... Oops!

LolliponyArt In reply to starsworne [2017-01-18 07:45:22 +0000 UTC]

Mhm indeed! They still are the only content I can draw from an original standpoint. Everything else I do must be from a reference of some sort. And yeah, don't let yourself go too long without touching a pencil. It's terrible DX trust me, I accidentally took a 3 month break

ArcCahlon [2017-01-16 14:38:01 +0000 UTC]

wow the way you did this is amazing you even got the lines perfectly strait along the face I can not imagine the pain of doing that. the colors are fabulous the detail is as well. this is 100% great

LolliponyArt In reply to ArcCahlon [2017-01-17 00:01:45 +0000 UTC]

Thank you for your appreciation!!! It was so hard to manipulate the paint and water but as long as the water was where I wanted it, the paint would follow. It's certainly a fun medium to attempt to control!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ArcCahlon In reply to LolliponyArt [2017-01-17 21:39:02 +0000 UTC]

fun but but difficult. you've always gotta make sure to mix the right amount of water with it to get that perfectly balance of light and darker colors. oh and NEVER use copy paper..... yeah not a good canvas lol.

LolliponyArt In reply to ArcCahlon [2017-01-17 23:25:09 +0000 UTC]

Yes indeed! As it turns out, there's an art to the perfect ratio for every situation xD yeaaahh... Printer paper is overall a big no no when it comes to art xD

Wonderful piece!
I love the way that there are no hard lines, gives it a dreamy feel.

Thank you so much! I generally refrain from line art because it's unnatural and without it, things look much softer (:

I should really try doing watercolour.
Well, one more thing to my art supply shopping list

I really like the muzzle's shape btw

Definitely give it a shot if you haven't! It can't be lots of fun to play around with it.

Ohh thanks! I never intended it turn out as round as it did it's just something that happens when you lack control xD

Ohh yeah, for sure, try it out! I had always stayed away from wet media and gosh I wish I hadn't. It can be lots of fun once you get the hang of things!

LolliponyArt In reply to vaser888 [2017-01-18 00:07:59 +0000 UTC]

Yes, do so! Just a tip though. I wouldn't get the water soluble colouring pencils. Though it may seem like you have much more control, it ends up being a waste of time applying colour and then mixing it up with water when you can work it right on. Also, I find you cannot get nicely saturated colours because the pencil can only offer so much. My experiences with them have all been pretty poor. /:

All I have are the water coloring pencils, I'll most likely try them out but thanks for the warning in advance. I'll see if I can magically make it look nice with them

Those will still do then xD I'm confident you'll make good use of them. And if you ever find yourself really enjoying them, be sure to invest in a set!
