That is a singularly beautiful looking weapon. Not to be rude, but is it merely a showpiece, or is it functional as well as gorgeous?

The name doesn't refer to the country Peru. It refers to the name of a sword in a fiction book.

Interesting name, and I don't know why you called it a Leagblade (I don't recall any swords having such a name, especially since this came across as a gladius when I first saw it), but I love it.

draskaruneray In reply to IllEatYourself [2013-06-13 04:11:00 +0000 UTC]

i thinkit is simeler to a central african salampasu sword not a gladius

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

IllEatYourself In reply to draskaruneray [2013-06-16 04:58:47 +0000 UTC]

Don't know why I said Leagblade instead of Leafblade. I don't usually make such mistakes. XD Still, knowing what a gladius looks like, this looks VERY similar.

CanadianDesperado In reply to IllEatYourself [2013-08-08 00:23:45 +0000 UTC]

Gladius' are actually originally modeled after spanish leafblades, if my history is correct.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

IllEatYourself In reply to CanadianDesperado [2013-08-09 01:30:22 +0000 UTC]

I probably wouldn't have known about that.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 0

psypop In reply to IllEatYourself [2013-02-13 17:35:57 +0000 UTC]

This does resemble a"mainz" style gladius which has a wasp waist which were later replaced by straight blades because they were easier to make-but the mainz continued to be carried by Roman soldiers and were cherished heirlooms passed on. This would have been the envy of any Roman soldier-most likely an officer would have loved to have this one. An impressive piece of work.

CanadianDesperado In reply to psypop [2013-08-08 00:24:40 +0000 UTC]

I would love to have a "mainz" gladius.

IllEatYourself In reply to psypop [2013-02-15 01:42:39 +0000 UTC]

That it is. And that explains a lot.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 0

LongshipArmoury In reply to IllEatYourself [2013-02-13 07:29:12 +0000 UTC]

The leafblade pretty much just refers to that waisted blade shape. Sort of modern nomenclature but it's stuck in the sword community.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

IllEatYourself In reply to LongshipArmoury [2013-02-15 01:43:02 +0000 UTC]

Waisted blade shape? Not sure I get what you mean.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

LongshipArmoury In reply to IllEatYourself [2013-02-15 05:49:55 +0000 UTC]

That sort of hourglass shape of the blade, where it tapers in at the middle.

beautiful peace of metal work, the engravings on the blade must have taken ages to get right, and the imprinted leather is a nice touch
great bit of work!!

Izanagis [2012-08-21 22:56:48 +0000 UTC]

I don't understand. The shape of the blade is that of a Gladius, and the design of the carvings in the blade is european. Could you please show us some historical references?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

LongshipArmoury In reply to Izanagis [2012-08-22 06:33:44 +0000 UTC]

The actual sword is based on a sword from Atienza, Spain, dating from the fourth century BC. Kind of an early Iberian/Celt precursor to the gladius type of look. The "Sword of Peru" doesn't refer to the country. It's just a reference to the "Attila the Hun" book trilogy that references that whoever found the "Sword of Peru" would rule the world.
