The couple was despised by the pridelanders, but they didn't mind. They had each other, it was all they needed. The opinions of those "ungrateful rebels" meant nothing for them.
Chumvi ends up disappearing while Kula is expecting their first litter, and the princess can barely carry the pregnancy while worrying and mourning for her mate. The only surviving cub is kidnapped by their dear King, under the pretense that Kula is unfit to care for the newborn.
