Description My entry for 's Darker Than Black, Whiter Than White Contest.

And what's more fitting to represent good and evil than my incarnations of the Devil and God themselves? ;D

My entry features my two characters: Morning (As seen previously in [link] and [link] )
and Nairo (as seen previously in [link] )

The contest also says I should give background on them so here it goes.

Where to start? Like I mentioned previously, in my story these are my incarnations of the Devil and God, well more like reincarnations. See, previously to the story's start, Armageddon actually came and happened. The Devil was defeated by God and his angels and thus Evil was vanquished from the world for good. However, God was also greatly wounded and soon after he, too, perished. In my story, the universe is actually the highest power. God and the Devil are actually creations of the universe, which likes a bit of both Order and Chaos. Thus, when it's creations end up killing each other, it finds that it must reset the world and make new deities.

Morning and Nairo are the new reincarnations of the Devil and God respectively. However, they are not born with that knowledge, and are amnesiac until they recognize their true selves.

Because the Devil was killed first, Morning comes into existence before Nairo. In fact, he comes into existence during which the previous God is still alive. He lives his life as a human before discovering his true identity.

When the previous God finally dies, Nairo comes into existence. This, however, is after Morning claims his true power and thus has a 'head start' on the new God. He tries to seek Nairo and kill him while he's still amnesiac and powerless and leads to the beginning of the actual story. (That's a lot for a prequel, ahaha.)

Through the course of the story, Nairo finds out about his godliness, albeit, unwillingly. The story's protagonist (which I haven't introduced or drawn yet xD) finds Nairo because the world is, of course, not doing so well without a God. Nairo, as the trope goes, is an anti-hero; he does not wish to accept the role of God, or the become the eternal combatant of Morning. (I mean who would want the Devil himself as an enemy? Yeesh.)

So my story sets up the question is Nairo truly a mature God that must forsake his own happiness for the responsibility that is destined upon him, or is he still truly only a 12-year-old boy? (12 years have passed since he came into being.) True, Nairo has inner wisdom and intelligence because of his true identity but because he has not truly accepted his role he is not truly God. Or that is, again, is something to wonder. What defines 'God'? Is it benevolence? Power? Righteousness? All of the above or none of the above?

Getting, away from all the spiritual hubbub and on to the actual picture.

This picture is of course, suppose to represent each character's aspects and somewhat look into their relationship. Nairo is, of course, shown to be the good, angelic character and is contrasted by Morning's demonic and evil nature. That is the overall picture, but there are several nuisances I dedicated to putting in to better define their personalities. For one, I've shown Nairo to being, almost, disintegrated by Morning. To be clear, Nairo is greatly weaker compared to Morning. This is because Morning discovered his power earlier than Nairo and has had more experience and greater acceptance for his role. While, on the other hand, Nairo fights who he is and thus his powers are less godly and more humanly. The disintegration also portrays Morning's wish to consume Nairo. He, being the Devil, inherently has utter distaste and hatred for Nairo. Nairo's disintegration happens in two parts of his body. At his torso/arms and around his head and most notably, his halo. Morning's destruction of Nairo is both physical and spiritual. The Devil desires to destroy Nairo's physical existence on Earth as well as his spirit of God. The decay of Nairo's body and the corruption of his halo signify his prophecised and almost imminent destruction at the hands of the more powerful and skilled Morning.

Onto Morning, as well as being the Devil, he is also the embodiment of Sadism- pleasure derived from pain and suffering. (His brothers are the aspects of Apathy and Wrath but those are characters to talk about for another deviation. XD) He smiles at his bitter enemy rather than scowls. This is because he enjoys Nairo's destruction rather than just being satisfied. He is enthralled more by the actual act of destroying Nairo rather than the results. Another question I try posing in my story is what it means to be truly evil. Morning and his brothers offer the 3 alternatives of what I see as evil. Sadism- being as I said before, having pleasure from suffering. Wrath- wishing to cause suffering just for its own sake. Or Apathy- feeling absolutely nothing towards and existence, essentially ignoring all suffering because of a lack of any empathy. Morning, is shown to be my personification of true evil, at least at the surface. (He is the Devil after all) Throughout my story I would try to allude more towards Apathy possibly being the truest of evils but I haven't written my story so really all of this is just story boarding. (Ahaha.)

I think that should do it for the contest. I really could write a whole book on these characters. (Maybe one day I actually will.) Because I believe it's an interesting concept and would like to investigate it and see what comes of it. If you guys are still interested in it I may be able to write-up more. (I mean I've only talked about just 2 characters, albeit, they are two highly important characters, but still only two. )

---
So enough of the contest I'll talk about my feelings on the picture itself......I LOVE IT. I think it's one of the best drawings I've drawn so far. I think even my coloring is better than usual! (I'm really proud of the clouds. XD!) I drew it in the span of 3 days and at first I wasn't really happy with it, but I really wanted to have some kind of entry to this contest and with AX and jobs, and college coming up I couldn't really dilly dally around so I kept working on it. I'm so glad I did because I really, truly, am happy with it. There are a lot of things that are wrong with it, it's definitely far from flawless (I'm looking at you, terrible robe) but I'm still happy none the less.
Anyways, if you have any criticisms or tips/advice I would most definitely love to hear it! I'm always open to finding out how to improve.

Aahhh, thank you! This is definitely one of my favorite drawings of all time. I had a lot of fun working on it and I still look back on it for inspiration. I'm planning on printing it and putting it in my room. : D

It's also teaches me some things I need to work on. For example: I really need to work on my light source. The Nairo's hair should be more illuminated because of his halo which totally slipped my mind.
This picture makes me proud of what I have accomplished, and determined to learn even more.

And thank you for your compliment. You know I always enjoy your work and opinion! : D!!!

Well as an atheist I get that a lot already so, ahaha. xD
But religion/mythology in general is very interesting even if I don't believe in it. :3

I've been on a Norse high since watching the Avengers. I mean I've always loved the Norse, but the Avengers kick started me to go and read all the tales again. XD I think after I'm done with my Norse book I'll look up Greek too. And I've always wanted to go through the Bible for its stories but it's a very daunting task. o_o;

Especially when you get to Leviticus. It's always the hardest one...
And yes, Nords are AWESOME. Always loved Loki. And I've "studied" Greek mythology ever since I was little. Still have yet to find anything about Calypso and Davy Jones yet, though...

Haha, Loki is most definitely my favorite. It's something with trickster gods that's way more funner than stuck up righteous ones like Thor. XD

Wasn't Calypso mentioned in the Odyssey? I think she was a witch that cursed Odysseus and his men or something like that...Jeeze 9th grade. I might be wrong though. As far as Davy Jones, ahaha, I think that's just for pirates maybe. xD

Yeah, I was pretty sure of that, too. Just wanted to find where that whole thing originated from. Plus, Calypso intrigues me. Still haven't made it to the Odyssey yet. I'm halfway through the Iliad (don't know if that's spelled right. Spellcheck told me to correct it. XP ).

Well we didn't read all of the Odyssey we pretty much skipped to where he goes to the Cyclops and then thereafter but yeah. And I think it's spelled Illiad haha.
