I wish I could unscrew a starbeam
and give it to you with

scrawled on ninety-nine cent tissue paper wrapping
I'd carry it in both hands
like an idol of my undying passion
presented at your temple

But you would toss it in your jar
of other mismatched metal parts
where it would lie unused for millenia
slowly cascading particles
and fading to a dull corroded chunk of meteorite
nonresponsive and barely glistening

This is why I never reach toward the sky anymore
with your hands supporting my stretched torso
gently resting on my hips, my center.
I remember how you guided me, swaying motion and thought
and when I lost myself and flew for you,
I lost my magnetism.
Instead of hovering closer,
gravitational pull back home
you cut my line and threw me out to battle
emptiness and ions.
