Description Been feeling very cyberpunk lately so while my PC was down I got into Revolution Software's excellent point-and-click adventure Beneath a Steel Sky, predecessor to the Broken Sword games. Enjoyed it immensely - colorful characters, engaging plot with nice backgrounds and voice acting (although the music did grate at times) plus some nifty Dave Gibbons artwork. Its freeware now and can be downloaded from the ScummVM website (which you'll need to play it) so I recommend giving it a try.

Anyway the character sprites in the game are very lo-res so I decided to challenge myself by drawing some of the major characters in more detail. Its a fun exercise taking the significant traits of the sprites and trying to incorporate them into a detailed portrait - with the exception of Foster who I had more reference thanks to the aforementioned Gibbons artwork.

From left to right:
Robert Foster, protagonist and stranger to futuristic Union City.
Gilbert Lamb, pompous misogynist and supervisor of the local pipe factory.
and Anita, put-upon employee of Lamb and vital ally to Foster's quest.

Will probably do another of these with a few more characters from the game.

thanks for making this, I got this game free the instant I signed up for GOG.com! It's rare when free games are actually good.

No problem! It was good of Revolution to share such a classic free of charge. Apparently they're making a sequel too!

(Late reply is late) Yeah, but it's on indefinite hold until after Broken Sword 5. And honestly, other than a reference back to this game in the first one, I'm not that interested in Broken Sword. I'm more into games along the lines of Myst.
Also, did you notice that my avatar was taken from a set of avatars in the GOG release? Particularly it's the one of Officer Stephen Reich. (I have a corporate OC of my own that looks a little like him, just with a different hat)

The game box included a little yellow book with files on each character.

It was a good game but disappointing in some respects. They cut alot out of it (I think originally it was intended you would investigate more characters and crimes which would have been awesome)

Yeah, Anita and her fate could definitely have used some fleshing out. She just disappears then you find her body in a the locker and its never mentioned again.

Thanks for the comment!

Love these - great work. Makes me wonder what a 'Beneath a Steel Sky' animated feature film might look like...
