Description This is my first entry into the Griffin contest for "Myths and Legends." I wanted to throw in my Protoceratops griffin from before (see link below) but the rules distinctly said that the animal had to be part feline, not dinosaur. But birds are dinosaurs, and their lineage goes back quite far to the first "true" bird, Archeopteryx. So if I was going to use the first bird then I might as well look up the first cat. The best that I could find was this article on Proailurus ( dinosaurs.about.com/od/otherpr…) which was a fossa-like animal that probably branched off into cats, dogs and mustelids. I don't know, but it looked cool. The color scheme is from an ocelot and the boat-billed heron which I picked simply on the grounds that it's pretty. So consider this the first evolutionary griffin. I imagine them to be small creatures, maybe less than half a meter at most in either height or wingspan. They would have been built for tree-climbing and the occasional glide or pounce instead of prolonged flight. The wings would help in slowing their descent, which means they would live in forests with extremely tall trees like the modern giant redwood forests of California. Wings like that would be a hazard in thick jungle trees, and feathers would be a better insulator than fur, in most circumstances, so I imagine the first griffins would live in colder climates.

Anyway, here's the link to one of my Protoceratops griffins. I won't be entering it in the contest, but I hope you enjoy: velociraptor-king.deviantart.c…

Very cool concept, having it be part Archaeoptery-part Proailurus. ^^
