Oh my god this is so life like it's scary! It looks like a real picture from a distance. I love the background it suits that jazzy mood of this photo, almost looks like smoke. Wonderful work I love your attention to detail.

My only criticism is that the model is obviously not a flute player--her hand position is completely wrong! Hehe, but its an amazing work!

Hahaha! I was just waiting for someone to catch that! None of us is a flute player, so we kinda just took what looked nice, I was completely unaware of what position her hand should be in. Another friend told me about it and I thought "uh oh, this drawing is going to turn out a joke"

Hehe, 'sall good, I just saw a picture of a violinist that has awful hand posture too, hehe, I've learned what makes a great picture isn't always accurate, hehe.

Thank you Robert. I kinda like how the head is blended in with the background. But I will not draw another one with a black background again. It takes forever

I rarely use charcoal for its messiness and lack of control. I recall trying charcoal drawing the shadow of a glass cup, but that didn't get nearly as dark as a soft pencil. Or is it because I tried to blend?

You can blend with the charcoal.
Try blending it with your finger and putting pressure on it.
It's much darker than any soft graphite pencil and it doesn't have any sheen at all.

I've seen Hillbery's work before. And I cannot believe Balliet drew that with charcoal. "blending with my finger"....Are you sure? Does it matter what kind of charcoal should I use. I used a charcoal stick, which did not turn out dark enough, at all

Charcoal sticks (vine or willow) are usually used for sketching.
Try using the charcoal 6B pencil.
But sometimes, you still need to add layers for extra dark..depending on what type of paper you're using.
I would suggest a vellum or anything with more texture.

Sigh...no wonder charcoals didn't work for me, I have been using a charcoal stick and thought it's nonsense to use charcoal with pencil. I'll check out some at Swain's, thank you Robert

another alternative is to use charcoal block..
it's like soft pastel..rectangular in shape.
this is for you to get different textures when using the broad side...
and also to cover the areas a lot faster.

! Wow!
When I looked at his artworks, all I thought is that this guy is not real! He's incredible! And most subjects of his paintings are ones I'm interested in. I'd just like to hear your opinion on a concern I have. Now, I'm almost sure that I will be going to University of Southern California, I know in matters of art it's definitely not at the same level as Otis or Art Center, but is it still a good place to study art?

Lol, I will double major Math and Art.
As for Casey Baugh, I was blown away more by this paintings than his charcoal drawings.
