Cower and kneel! The pencil freak is back!

I’ve got a lot of mixed feelings about this one. Started with the sketches way back in April, worked on it with gusto for a while and then I hit the wall (again). It then laid on my desk giving me angst until a couple of weeks ago when I felt brave enough to continue. It feels nice to have a pencil in hand again though.

Technical stuff: Mechanical pencil 0,5 and 0,7 mm, HB and some charcoal.
Size: 39x33 cm / 15x13 inches
Time: About 48 hours in total from first sketches to signing the finished work.

Thank you. Glad you like them. Nice with water creatures for a change - I almost always go for ground living ones otherwise.

Sharp toothed, slithering monsters make their return. It's indeed good to see your pencil at action again and those monsters too. It has been while since we have seen some terrors from deep below. Bonedogs are fine creatures of their own right but nothing beats gigantic sea monsters. That unfortunate squid has no change, no change at all. Perhaps if you would draw a giant or colossal squid next time. That could give more opposition.

You said that you had some difficulties while making this and mixed feelings about the outcome but I have to say that I can't see any mistakes or odd things in this at all. All textures look great, those rays of light are a good add (from where I gather that this can't be happening nowhere very deep as the sunrays can penetrate the water so clearly) and the creature design is good looking. I am glad we don't have those in our lake.

Did you use any prehistoric creature as a reference or base for the monsters or are those ourely your design?

Slithering indeed. And true, it was some time ago since I did any water creature. (I daresay the technique has improved somewhat since. ) The sun rays were perhaps a little strong but added to that coral reef-atmosphere. And speaking of…. Those corals were just as hard work as those creatures. I am not doing corals for a while again.

A giant squid next time? It would certainly make more of a challenge for the sea serpent than that ink-squirting little morsel. We’ll see what happens in future seascapes. Tentacles are always a good option you know.

The creature-design is a mixture of all sorts of things. I found an old dragon-design I made at least 10 years ago and was able to make it a little more “fishy”. There is of course the influence of eels, whales and indeed prehistoric animals, like mosasaurus. Finally there is a personal touch in there as well.

Mixed feelings, yes… but not necessarily about any eventual mistakes or the final outcome, of which I am very pleased. Sometimes on really big projects I get very hesitant. I suddenly feel like the motive’s not going to work or think that the project was a bad idea, with a certain loss of energy added to it. This often leads to long pauses, which is why I was unable to continue on this one for almost 2,5 months. Next thing there is I feel quite the opposite, that I can see all the potential just lying there and waiting for me and that it’s going to look absolutely great once it’s finished.  All in all it’s a bit confusing and not very logical but there you go.

Well, to my understanding the coral reefs are quite shallow so the sun rays fit the place and situation. And I can easily imagine that those corals were a pain in the .... well, that those were hard to do.

So an old dragon was forced to "loan" his body as a base for the sea creatures. What an unfortunate fate for a fire-breather like him.

I gathered that the "problems" were more in the time and motivation sector but wanted to reassure you that the final outcome was not hampered by those.

Looks awesome. Makes me want to do something in pencil again. Hopefully work will slack off a bit soon...
