Description Leslie William Nielsen
February 11, 1926 – November 28, 2010

So long Sir. Thank you for everything.

This is not my art, but was done by a friend of mine over on AOL, Robert Freedman also known as HuMaxx20 --no relation to anyone on DA with a similar name. He credits Kenny Mitchell for the ship meshes.

Back in the 1990’s, when my kids were preteen, we watched a multimedia movie at one of the northern Ohio theme parks. I don’t even remember if it was Cedar Pointe or Sea World. It was “Capt. Lucky” and starred Leslie Nielson as a very inept pirate captain. Stuff like pigeons crapping on the pirates and ceiling sprinklers spattering on the audience. The kids all went, “Ewwww!“ We were rolling in the aisles. I loved it.

As I write, I googled “Forbidden Planet” and am watching it full-length on Youtube. Leslie is very fresh-faced. The movie is both 1950’s sci fi kitsch and prescient of Star Trek.

When I got my niece to watch FP for the first time, she could not believe that he was
1) young, and
2) a serious actor

(rolling eyes) Like her aunt has been old forever.

On a whim, I looked up his filmography. Some of his other serious roles were the captain in the Poseidon Adventure, Francis Marion in Disney’s Swamp Fox, and a very sadistic prostitute’s john in Nuts, with Barbra Streisand. That last one is quite disturbing.

I found the movie I referred to. Pirates 4-D. It was shown at Busch Garden theme parks and is wonderfully ridiculous. The poor captain is utterly beset by all manner of misfortune. There are sprinklers in the theater both overhead and in front of the viewers. One leaves the show quite sodden.

It takes a Great Man who can make fun of himself and help us do so too.
