Halloween fun!! “Nobody f#%s with The Mouse,” is what author Harlan Ellison said after been fired from Disney Studios on his first day at the job! It is a sentiment that I have always remembered. However, I periodically get asked if I ever draw Disney characters. The other thing I often hear is, “You should work at Disney.” Disney, of course, is a giant in comics, cartoons, animation, and films. So, I thought of Harlan, and The Mouse, and Halloween, and the people who have made those comments over the years and came up with this piece. As a child, I remember Disney’s version of “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” being the quintessential take on that classic story. Accompanying the Headless Horseman are the Hitchhiking Ghosts from Disney’s Haunted Mansion, several characters from “The Nightmare Before Christmas,” Maleficent, The Evil Queen, and Chernabog from “Fantasia.” The protagonists of this piece are The Mouse, his girlfriend, Minnie, and brothers Huey, Dewey, and Louie. The central character is again, the Queen of Halloween, Elvira, Mistress of the Dark. Originally, I had planned to make it Marvel’s Scarlet Witch (since Disney owns Marvel), but after reviewing some reference images, I decided to go in another direction. So, thank you Harlan, wherever you are, for your advice. I hope you and The Mouse are at peace. Happy Halloween!
