Description
In the world of J.R.R. Tolkien, Finarfin, also known as ArafinwΓ«, was a fictional character and an Elven prince of the Noldor, one of the three kindreds of Elves in Tolkien's legendarium. He was the third son of FinwΓ«, the High King of the Noldor, and his mother was Indis. Finarfin's siblings included FΓ«anor and Fingolfin.
Finarfin initially opposed FΓ«anor's rebellion against the Valar, the god-like beings overseeing the world, and the subsequent journey of the Noldor to Middle-earth. When the Noldor arrived in Beleriand, Finarfin chose to turn back before crossing the HelcaraxΓ«, the treacherous icy wasteland, and returned to Aman.
Later in the First Age, Finarfin repented of his earlier decision and, along with his son Finrod Felagund, joined the fight against Morgoth, the Dark Lord. Finarfin played a role in the events of "The Silmarillion" and is mentioned in the tales of the Elder Days. His descendants, including Galadriel and Celeborn, would go on to play important roles in the events of the Second and Third Ages of Middle-earth.
