Description For the Prince of Persia competition! I really wanted to do something for it, as well as having an excuse to draw something from Prince of Persia.

So this is my submission inspired by the 2008 game, with The Prince and Elika. Click here for info about the contest!

I really hope you like it. I may tweak some things before the competition closes Friday night. Let me know your opinions!!

DreamingBird In reply to lunarsparks [2009-03-12 01:30:35 +0000 UTC]

No problem and sorry for the shallow comment, I have so many studies that it is driving me crazy.

Honestly I couldn't judge it as bad or as good, because I don't think the resemblance affects the quality of the work. If you look at the Monkey Island 1 cover (I believe), Guybrush's eyes (the main blonde dude) look very much alike yours. The piece sort of wants to make me call it something that would be put in classic gaming, I have no idea why, and again its not a good or a bad thing, but its awesome either way. It is a brilliant piece of work and I love how the scarf swerves into the Prince's face Well done.

Ive heard about the game, but never really played it. Even though, this is amazing as always. I love how you make up your outfits along the way.. you could combine being a designer with your aristic sides.. Im telling you out a vernissage! let people see your stuff. You're great.

lunarsparks In reply to HobitaChan [2008-12-16 13:32:46 +0000 UTC]

It really depends upon what games you are into whether you would enjoy this one. It's very much plot and action based. It's not something you can pick and play for only a few minutes.

As much as I changed the clothing, the basis is still the design of the game makers. So, I can't take credit for the style of their clothing on this one. I just tweaked things such as the pattern within the diamonds on the prince's coat as well as those little 'flower' details on it. If you look up the new game on the web or press the link for the competition in my comments, you may be able to identify the slight changes I made.

I had to look up what a 'vernissage' was, lol, so I got a bit confused there.

I'm getting there Derya. Maybe soon, who knows .... You are wonderful for all the support you have given my work.

Oh... where to begin? Left to right? Center out? Cool to Coolest? Coolest to Mentionably cool? Oooorrrr... Whatever I can spill out at at once without getting dizzy?

First off: I LOVE that you're not in your weird perspective style. Not that I mind it, but the better proportions help me to identify with it.

Starting with the prince: I know you had fun with all of the blade hilt detail. I like how the blade itself shows the tempering of the metal as well as the reflection of his scarf. The scarf is strange, as is his hair, but the face is pretty nice. He's got his iconic scar, the eyes are bright enough to pierce through the picture, and you did a good job of angling it so that he looks like a good guy. I really appreciate the effort that went into his scabbard; and the little points of reflected light off of it. Good attention to the little things. His vest is simple and clearly defined, and the rest of him is unremarkable, letting the important things do their job.

The background: I havn't played the games, I don't know if it's a real place or not, but that blurred town/monastery/columned place is somewhere I want to go explore. It's got equal parts screaming out obscured mystery and tempered, maybe corrupted, but not faded majesty.

You knew I would be coming to her, the girl(a brunette! ) on the prince's right. To begin with her, she stands in her own light, while pieces of the princes shadow are cast on her - that's excellent positioning thematically as well as to show her off with. She's beautiful, with a lot of filled in yet comfortably short brunette hair. Her eyes aren't calling, like they are in other similar pieces of yours, but her entire expression speaks of attentive readiness. The face is well filled out and rounded in the right spots, and the effect continues down her neck(with a small crease), around her diminutive shoulders, her reasonably occupied chimise, the arched back and the curved hips. The swirls of power on her hands are nice, and the bend in her arms seems natural for this sate of preparedness to use the power. The only question your painting doesn't seem to answer about her is one of height: she's behind the prince and crouched down on her legs too, even more, it sometimes seems. Is she taller?

To finish out my commentary, I like the dark tendrils along the border. You might consider doing something about the ones on the left, they in particular look more like someone's long hair is caught in the same breeze as the scarf, than that something is encroaching/fogging the vision we have of the two.

To say I was blown away by your comment is an understatment. Thank you so much for the attention you gave to every aspect!! This has got to be the best comment I've ever had and most detailed.

I did have fun with the hilt, in fact, I found that I really got into this one overall. I had fun doing the scabbard too and I'm very happy that you noticed it. Also, in the fact that I didn't overwork the rest of him. I was worried that it might not appeal to others in that sense ... but you can go too far in the details and I like the way you stated it in the sense that it is'unremarkable'.

The background was completely made up from my mind as I worked. Since I've played a few of the games, I kept reminding myself of the environment that the Prince would be best seen in. I do appreciate that you said you would like to explore it. Very much so!

I'm glad you spotted the state of preparedness, as that is how I saw the whole moment. The calm before action is taken.

Oh and I can see what you mean about the tendrils on the left. Being in quite a prominent position and with nothing to distract from it, it is possible for the minds to create that idea.

Anyway, thank you so much for taking the time to do a commentary. I appreciate every word and it means a lot to me to have such a considered response (and a witty one too ).

I'm thrilled you enjoyed my comment.

There are levels of detail to this including and beyond what I mentioned, too, that allow for it to be something someone returns to and feels rewarded spending time to view. The brilliant way that the girl's necklace stands out on her neck, the illuminating effects of the magic on the characters, the fascinating swirl of the power itself, to the bare tree in the background, and even the consideration of what the pair is facing are all aspects that warrant attention and can draw it from your viewers.

I feel like I could go on until I ran out of adjectives, but that would be a tragic end to an aspiring poet like myself.

You know, I never knew if this would be that successful in other people's eyes but I am very happy that you think it has, and that it has appealed to you that much. You've noticed so many things that I am not sure others may have seen. What can I say other than thank you again. You've made my day, hehe.

Oh no! That would not be a fitting end for a poet. Rest assured that the words you have already provided me with are powerful enough.

A truely awesome piece. I haven't played the games myself, but from what I've seen other people play, it looks great. The details you included are really cool.
The only constructive criticism I can offer would be to sharpen up the shadows on his forearm and glove. The shading on the faces have a great balance of sharp and smooth shadows, but the forearm and glove just seem a little more vauge to me with all the smoothnes.
I hope that helps?
