Description 9th place + Judge’s choice of the HCL 2018 season

EDIT: Just to be clear; Khaos is wearing a jacket because she forgot to take her Monarch T-shirt. I wanted to draw an image of this but I'm at camp right now with bad WiFi and limited phone usage so I can't upload it right now I will upload it when I'm home (:

Okay, this piece killed me.
I spent a total of 17 hours and 14 minutes on this drawing, and that is a new personal record. To put that into perspective; most of my big, detailed drawings take about 3-5 hours. This one took roughly four times as much time.
This is the first drawing I’ve been working on since I got ProCreate (in the past I used Autodesk Sketchbook), and I’ve taken a few breaks from the drawing to draw other stuff and explore the program a bit more. Eventually I made a few brushes myself, which I used in this drawing too
This is also the biggest canvas size I’ve ever worked with, usually I work with screen format (2048 x 1536px) and this one is sooo much bigger. That gave me the possibility to pay some more attention to my weak point; the background and its details. I am really proud of the result, to be honest.
And for the story; I hate writing, so don’t expect too much from it. I am quite satisfied with it, though. Eventually I got tired of writing so it became super weird, woops. I used a Shakespearan Translator for all the dialogue, by the way. So that’s why they all talk so weirdly

REPRESENTING THE TEAM!

THE PLAY

[1068 words]

ACT I: ENTRANCE

Light falls through the arches, making the peach coloured sand glow. Some clouds drift off along with the setting sun.

Khaos and her trusty mare enter the stage.
The team continues their mission; finding the long lost gold. They failed to do so in the previous chapter. They weren't able to endure London's torrential rain, resulting in a defeat. A paper plane pilot had managed to get a hold of the gold before they had the chance.
The discomfiture had been hard on the two, but they had risen from their ashes and today they are more determined than ever before.
Khaos mutters under her breath: "Alloweth's wend receiveth yond treasure, wench!"
And so the two monarchs set off to the adventure waiting for them.

ACT II: PLITVICE LAKE

The team comes across some waterfalls.
"Stand ho! This might beest the lodging," Khaos cries out, "The treasure is at each moment enshielf in the cave behind the wat'rfall!"
Alpha Phoenicis stops and sniffs in the air. "Doth thee smelleth something, wench?" Khaos asks. Alpha Phoenicis sniffs in the air again, for dramatic effect. Suddenly her head snaps to a moss covered cove. "Ov'r th're?"
Alpha Phoenicis bolts over to the hole and Khaos pushes the moss aside to have a clear view. The team is met with a disappointing sight; there is no sign of gold. Khaos is however not so foolish to believe that for a second. She urges her companion into the cave so they can inspect it better.
Alpha Phoenicis's sniffs in the air again, and points to a small rock on the floor. Khaos dismounts and picks up the rock. She brings it to her nose and inhales the smell. "T smells liketh a combination of h'rse piss, gunpowd'r and mineth owneth bathroom, yond can only cullionly one thing..." she pauses dramatically. "A filthy comet wast h're!"
Khaos hurriedly mounts her mare. "Quick, we needeth to findeth yond treasure bef're those smelly space rocks doth!"
The monarchs flutter away to their next destination.

ACT III: ARCH OF SERGIL

Khaos sweats heavily. She had not expected the blazing sun to be this merciless on her. Her coat is sweaty and her hands clammy in her gloves.
They pass the Arch of Sergil. They take a quick look, but Alpha Phoenicis doesn't smell anything peculiar. "We shouldst moveth f'rward as festinate as possible. Dwelling on places with nay signeth of the treasure is not a valorous idea." They return to their position in the sky. "Waiteth!" Khaos points to the top of the arch. "I seeth something glimm'ring!" They land on the arch. Phoenix hastily trots to the shiny spot. "T's... an emblem," Khaos comments, "A comet emblem!" She roars in rage.
First, they brainwash her fiancée and now they also lure them away from the gold to snatch it away right in front of their noses. "We shall findeth the gold bef're those comets doth!"
The monarchs sped away on the horizon.

ACT IV: THE MARINE

They arrive at the marine. "We shouldst merit down with some wat'r and then searcheth the ships." They splash some water onto themselves.
Khaos scans the ships. "We shouldst searcheth yond tiny broken boat," Khaos concludes. They don't find anything. The team searches the rest of the boats, but no gold is found. "T wilt beest in the lasteth one," the gold skinned woman concluded confidently. They enter the ship and are immediately shrouded in darkness. "Fie alas, wh're is the lighteth switcheth?" Suddenly a light appears. It comes closer and closer. Alpha Phoenicis's ears shoot back. "Yond tooketh longeth," the face emerging from the darkness comments. Khaos hisses. "Thee filthy comet!" The comet, Sophia, lets her companion Alpha and Omega step forward. She laughs. "Sayeth what thee wanteth, the gold is mineth!"
Khaos grimaces. "Nev'r!" she yells.
Alpha Phoenicis charges at Alpha and Omega. The Alphas fight. Their riders don't play it nice either. They slash, claw, punch and pull. "Kicketh the bucket, egg!" With those words, Sophia stabs Khaos. The monarch gasps and falls down. Sophia cackles. "And anon, thee!" she points at Alpha Phoenicis, "Th're can only beest one alpha!"
The mare looks back at the body of her fallen rider. Rage fills her, and she kicks Sophia to the ground. She hits the wall and a loud crack can be heard. The chimera lures Alpha and Omega outside. She receives a kick from the stallion, but ignores the pain. When the stallion charges at her, she takes her chance. She jumps aside and the stallion barrels into the water. Alpha Phoenicis quickly returns to Khaos, who is holding a treasure chest in her hands. "We didst t! We hath found the gold!" she exclaims. Alpha Phoenicis neighs happily, and lowers her head so Khaos can pull herself up. "Alloweth's wend home," she said to her horse.

ACT V: THE AMPHITHEATRE

Alpha Phoenicis and Khaos land in the theatre. "And?" a fellow monarch, Summer, asks. "The treasure belongs to us anon!" Khaos says with her last breath.
The monarchs cheer, not noticing their heroine drop to the ground. They gather around the chest and open it. They hold their breath.
Suddenly, Ruby McLake jumps out of the treasure chest. "Ha! Thee has't been bamboozled, foolish eggs!" She catches Summer by surprise, and manages to stab her with a hotdog. The monarch joins Khaos on the ground. "Oh nay, Khaos and Summer has't p'rished! Who is't is going to saveth us anon?" Zachary cries.
"Well, not me," Ruby says dryly. She throws her stash of hotdogs, each sausage impaling the remaining monarchs. She cackles and applauds like a maniac. The other comets appear out of nowhere and join her.

Lu woke up from the applause. She must've dozed off in the heat. That had been a really odd dream, though.
She blinked a few times to get used to the light, and saw Khaos finishing her lap. Damn, had she missed all of that? She quickly joined in with the applause.
Her girlfriend, whose face was the definition of sweaty, spotted her face on the tribune and smiled while and gave her a thumbs up.
Lu smiled and made her way to the entrance of the arena so she could hug her girlfriend and give Phoenix some well deserved treats.

Ohmygod lundy... HOW DID YOU IMPROVE SO MUCH IN JUST ONE DEVIATION TIME? o.O I thought your previous deviation was a huge improvement already, but you managed to blow my mind once again o.o Really like the composition, it's a nice to choice to put the horse in the front and the whole setting in the back The details tho, those flowers, THOSE HUMANS, everything... I just really love it and I really enjoy to see your art, your style just looks so natural :3 Keep up the mind-blowing work <3

Good grief, those details!!
I love all those little petals fluttering around and all those bricks in the amphitheatre wall. Especially that wall makes me want to go look at it all over again. The way you did the sun hitting the wall there and the shadows, just, ugh it's so good!! And all those people, waaaah, I can't stop looking at it.
So cool!

Thanks so much!
The details were a pain in the arse so it’s really nice to hear someone appreciates it to be honest Especially the audience, I think I spent about 2-3 hours on that
