I practiced shading before I coloured my drawings, so you could do that to make your drawings a bit more complete. But when I‘m colouring something, I usually draw the colours on another paper to see if I like the choice of colours or not. I’d also draw the lines with a Fineliner and erase the pencil underneath first, because it doesn’t look that good colouring a pencil drawing. But that’s just how I do it. I hope it helps a bit... ^^

Aaaah, thank you for your response! I usually don't use another paper because it never looks as good as the original sketch (which is also why my shading is very slight most of the time) but I'll keep it in mind and try it out some time! c: And of course, hearing other's opinions is always of help!
