Here's another photo from Tierpark Sababurg, where the alpha female and male (in the center of the picture) are being in a generally playful mood, and one of the lower-ranking wolves to the left joins in.This took place when the pack is dissolving right after some rallying. The alpha female, usually very rough and aggressive, is initiating a lot of play these days. However, she still keeps the omega down and picks on him.
I chose to upload this photo because it portrays best what the pack is all about these days. Rather relaxed... still.

They are Eurasian wolves. Red wolves look a lot different, more coyote-ish in total.

A beautiful piece of digital canvas with a pack of lovely beasts. Are these Red Wolves (Mexican) or are they in their summer molt (coat), or something else entirely? And you're right about the behaviour; had you not said that the playful chummer was an Alpha I probably wouldn't have guessed it otherwise; it's not that higher-ranking pack members won't be playful, but in my own bias I wouldn't expect much of it, and probably not like this. ^_^

They are Eurasian wolves (Canis lupus lupus) in their summer coat. And yes, I haven't seen her acting playful very often. But once in a while she seems to be in the mood... briefly
