Description A squeak of floorboards, a whisper of wind, a creak of the settling house... sounds we hear all the time. Normal... safe....

Until... you get that gut feeling. That familiar sound...Β

Is no longer safe...

...........................................

A super quick, scribbly, experimental piece I wanted to toy with. Drawing a pic that's creepy on it's own right. Your mileage may vary on if I succeeded- but I've been wanting to flex myself a bit with evoking something other than odd fetishes!

God, this is so f-ing creepy.

I kinda love it in that regard for actually managing to creepy me out.

2019's just begun, but i'm already looking forward to whatever you're gonna do for Alo-ween (if you're still calling it that).

I'm getting some Junji Ito vibes from the heavy hatching elements of the piece and the weird spindly large finger hand and the twisted face. Although, we see a bit too much of the monster at once, I'd say. Much less mystery than there could be for what the piece wants to evoke, I think. Still well done.

He's one of the best in solid black and white horror pieces! \ovo/

That's a good point- I was going for the creepy atmosphere "before the page turn" so to speak. But probably went a bit too far with it. The monster design I chose- of elongated skull- couldn't be hidden behind the door even to get the creepy eye poking through. But isn't shocking/grotesque enough to make it a *reveal* pic either.

Indeed. I'll admit, I'm a wuss when it comes to horror stuff, so I've only heard it second hand, but it's chilling and disturbing.

I feel like it would be more sinister of there were something untoward that at least we know could happen to the girl. Her being unaware of what's happening isn't bad, but the dramatic irony of us having an idea of what's coming, maybe not specifically. That's tricky in lieu of a sequence.

Definitely- something to imply harm or danger- something that's not too specific so there's only one thing to be afraid of.

ava-tobiax In reply to Lushaani [2019-01-23 22:09:42 +0000 UTC]

Indeed. Because the thing that's apparent is that he's looking. But it's not an unsettling amount of looking. Or, well, doors are meant to be passed through. A space under furniture, not so much. I think it's about making the expectations not match the results. A particularly chilling "based on truth" story that comes to mind involved a man watching the news, which described and depicted a dangerous criminal, only for the man to see the criminal in the rain with a weapon standing in his yard through the screen door. As the news report goes on, the man sees the criminal getting closer and smiling. It's only when the killer is close that he realizes something isn't adding up, only to discover the killer was in his house the entire time.

Context is the hardest part with a single image.Β

It's almost like trying to tell a story with as few words as possible X3

ava-tobiax In reply to Lushaani [2019-02-03 04:45:39 +0000 UTC]

Indeed indeed. Perhaps it could be worth it to try and use that lack of context to the advantage to make it creepy?

If I may be a bit frank;
While there's a distinctly creepy air about this scene, I can't help but feel that it lacks something to really unnerve me.Β

That's the secret! That's the thing I want to learn! That little *piece* that makes a drawing unnerving on its own.

A mix of desensitization, nearly 10 years of focusing on how to make something sexy or erotically sexy, and a preference for horror comics over single horror images. Has me grasping at what that piece is.

It isn't necessarily gore- nor is it a vague sense of menace cause I got that kinda. It could be detail- cause this is a scribble.

Do you have any grasp of what that little missing piece is? At least for you?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

SV-Writer In reply to Lushaani [2019-01-13 10:47:19 +0000 UTC]

Well, creepiness is difficult to capture; I'd say its the hardest form of horror to portray in still images.Β

While terror can easily be shown, as a monster chasing a person down a dark street; Creepy is the idea of unease, from the unnatural, yet safe.Β
-A dog with a set of human teeth, grinning at you, without moving or blinking.
-A man swaying gently, underneath a solitary street-light, before he moves towards you, slowly, on a dark street, with a wide smile on his face.Β
-A voice in the fog, with the words of your friend, but sounding like a different person.Β

In this picture, we see the monster poking out of the door; A obviously scary idea, but not creepy, but there's a clear reason for the wrongness. That monster.Β
Now, if I'd try to make it creepy, I'd instead put... Humans. Dozens and dozens of humans, all pushing at the crack of the door, squishing into each other, just to look at the girl on the chair, but not attempting to enter the room. Not struggling or fighting; Just watching with glee. With humans, you create questions, because of the immediate presumption of Reason, humanity and morality. You create an unnatural and questionable environment.Β

Creepiness is captured when you take the normal and make it different, but not dangerous. There is a visible degree of unease, because there is something off in the idea; When something is not the way it is supposed to be. That's the case for me at least.Β

Now, I'd take my opinion with a grain of salt; Creepiness differs from person to person, and its hard to find something to scare everyone.Β
Look around you and think; What would make something ordinary unsettling to you?
It is really hard to make things explicitly creepy these days because of the types of horror we've been exposed to, but if you do succeed in finding that creepiness, you're gonna scare the shit out of everyone.Β

...
ahem, well... I hope this helps!

So to accomplish more "Creepiness" rather than Terror or Menace- I'd need to up the uncanny valley content. Closer to normal, save for one or two elements out of alignment. More- *almost* human.

That makes sense- I'm not sure if it'd apply to all types of "horror" ink drawings I want to try making, but the Uncanny-Creep response is one I do need to practice!!!

SV-Writer In reply to Lushaani [2019-01-23 07:18:30 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, that's my opinion!

And you're probably right; It doesn't apply to all types of horror, but its a good one to understand and use.Β

The air of creepy! \ovo/ Right direction!

Yee- there's a bit of context missing here I could improve next time- she looks more "huh?" or "again?" rather than genuinely unnerved. And it could be cheesy- but maybe the "creak" being drawn into the illustration would have sold more action?

BlooberBoy In reply to Lushaani [2019-01-13 11:24:46 +0000 UTC]

I think one detail, that might help make her look more uneasy, is to widen her eyes and/or shrink down the pupils some.
