Description
Ancient Babylonia:
In ancient Babylonia, Ereshkigal is called the Great Lady of the Earth. Ereshkigal is the Sumerian Goddess who passes judgment in her kingdom. The temple dedicated to her was located in Cuthah. Ereshkigal is a Goddess of the underworld. Most Dark Occultists of the Left hand path recognize her as a Goddess of Death. At the festival of Akitu, goats or blood of babies was sacrificed to Ereshkigal. Ereshkigal is believed to be the older sister of Inanna, the Goddess of love, war, and fertility. There is another myth of Ereshkigal that tells of how she came to have a second husband, Nergal who is a God of war and plague.
Ereshkigal is a Dark Moon Goddess, who represents the devouring of Life and the casting of the Circle of infinity. Ereshkigal represents the desire to continue in existence. (Immortality) Ereshkigal rules over the black Magickal arts. For the Dark occultist, ereshkigal is not viewed as a destructive Goddess. She is believed to be the embodiment of secret knowledge and hidden desires, the subconscious. Her symbolic animals are dragons, serpents, owls, ravens, crows, black dogs, and black horses.
In some Pagan traditions, Ereshkigal is said to split into three to depict the different stages of a woman's life: mother, maiden and Crone. She is associated with Hecate according to Pagans.
