Description Random black and white picture test with a greenware(unfired) cylinder that i poked lots of holes in.

I was more interested in a getting a good black and white result rather than documenting a crappy piece like this lol

It's really not that big, and it was a terrible shape, so I ended up putting holes in it with drill bits

I made a bowl once on the wheel that was a little off...and ended up using a pencil to make holes in it and now use it as a collander when i cook

art is making mistakes a feature of a piece

environmental science/pre-med

i took ceramics thinking that it fulfilled my art requirement, but I had already filled it like 2 years before...so it counted for nothing

ah, is there an art department with a kiln where you study?

yes but you have to be in a course to use them. and really only like 3 ppl are allowed to use them...its a small school and they are really particular.

do you have your own kiln? or do you use one at some type of school or art center?

I have an old small electric kiln, it goes up to midfire range ok but is getting on, and lots of things don't fit in it. I really fire most of my work at school, we're lucky we have ~6 kilns and they fire all the time, hopefully the course doesn't get cut next year

I don't know much about photography, but on the side of the piece, I'd say if you used it as a little candle holder it might be pretty. Especially if you glazed it and the glaze was a bit translucent and stayed in the holes. Dunno if there's any translucent glaze think enough for that though, haven't worked with it since high school.

that's a great idea, here I actually did use it as a candle holder: [link]

Still unglazed, not sure what would work, I love the matte plain clay surface

Oh that is beautiful as a candle holder. I'd only thought of the glaze to fill in the holes and give the light a bit of a color, but I like the nice warm light the canlde gives off anyways.

agreed with skipychic, if you use that as a candle holder the light would give off through the holes you poked on the side it'll look great, is that piece translucent? it would be extra-nice for a candle holder ^^ anyways good job

practice practice practice..
We watched a video on Zen way of becoming a pottery master.. they did 15 years of apprentice work, never keeping anything they made, from throwing to firing to glazing then smashing it.. once they reached the end of their 15 yrs, they were a master and were then allowed to sell and keep what they made...

I think it looks great...I tried to get into ceramics in high school but I was allergic to the classroom, I got hives being in there.

damn that sucks - could you try again? maybe it was the dust or something else (a coincidence?)

Perhaps, the teacher said something about mold in the classroom or something. So maybe that was it.

M-A-Ceramics In reply to chibi-ninja [2007-12-11 07:36:25 +0000 UTC]

Yeah it could be mold. How long do you have left in high school? If you don't have any plans to study after, you could always try ceramics at a college

cool, you should try it i'm in my 20's and not going to a university, but still tertiary institution (tafe here in aus) probably called (something) college there

even just walking into a place that has a room full of clay and wheels, it would be great to see if you want to have a go

Oh I left high school a few years ago, I'm in my twenties, but it does seem like an idea.
