it looks like you can achieve really good results with googlesketchup!
I can make basic shapes in it, but really want to try using it more
did you just build the shapes floating in space? or do you need to create some sorta flat panel to build it on?
(I hope that makes sense)

I don't mind a bit of perspective--I did some perspective by hand to calculate the size of the figures--but yes, if I had to draw every perspective line by hand in some complicated architecture scene, that would get old fast. Especially if the vanishing point was way outside of the picture plane.
RPGmaker is very fun! I've spent hundreds of hours on that program, probably.

I love all the nice curves to the buildings and the shape of that arch. I remember once I tried to use google sketchup and I epic-failed, but this town looks really pretty!

Thanks! Sketchup has many shortcomings, and its most versatile features seem to be the hardest to learn and understand. It's not very good at making arcs and ellipses, either. But, if you're making just a simple block thing for perspective, it's actually pretty easy, I think.
