Description Volvagia from Ocarina of time.

This is the reason why I started this series. I really wanted to do my version of Volvagia.

Since starting this series I have done several 'dragon' bosses and most of them had the characteristics of snakes, serpents, horses or eels. Barba from the second Legend of Zelda game is the most similar boss to Volvagia, and this is because technically Barba is actually Volvagia. His name was mistranslated. Barba was designed very much like a python or cobra. Looking at other fan art pictures of Volvagia very few of them verged away from the games design, and why not? His design is awesome. He's probably my favorite boss from the whole series. In most of those pictures they had him looking very agressive, angry and very snake like. I wanted to do something alittle dfferent.

My version of Volvagia is part wolf, part goat, part chicken and part snake. I drew him in a relaxed pose, sitting down and panting like a dog.

For those of you who havn't read the manga, Link found Volvagia as a baby dragon and took care of him for a while. One day Volvagia grew too big for Link to keep and he gave him away. Ganondorf got his hands on the dragon and brainwashed him to be the angry violent dragon we know in the game. In the manga when Link has to fight him he is very reluctant, but realizes Volvagia does not recognize him. It's not until Link is about to behead Volvagia that the dragon says; 'Link'. The moment of rememberance is fleeting however and the dragon reverts back to the demon Ganondorf brainwashed him to be and Link has no choice but to kill the dragon that he looked after. This is one of the reasons why I did not want to draw Volvagia in the usual 'fight me, I am eeevil' pose.

Anyway hope you guys like him.

Overall

Vision

Technique

Impact

This is actually my first one of these.
This is an incredible work. The combination of the Chimera features in this vision of the classic OoT boss makes a instant impression. You made changes to the design and tasteful ones at that, but at the same time, this creature is instantly recognizable as Volvagia to any Zelda fan. I think what I like most is his central body and head. The crimson fur and his long curved mustache and horns along with his legs are very and I mean very well done. As is the lower section of the tail and body. My only gripe with this work is perhaps the middle body, which I think is a bit too bright and smudged compared with the trailing tail and the upper body and head and perhaps the long "hair" of his mane while colorful and very well considered (I like the addition of the red-violets, purples and even the small twinges of green in addition to the classic red, oranges and yellows) is perhaps a bit blurred. It looks more like a stream of hard to define gas than flame. And while a mane of incandescent gas might work wonderfully with this version of our favorite dragon boss, it feels again too smudged in comparison with the rest of the work. Regardless this is an amazing piece of art and I look forward to more of your work.

Really nice work, as usual! I didn't know Volvalgia's backstory until now...made me sad. Anyway, have you ever tried doing art for "How to Train Your Dragon?" I'm not a fan of it myself, but I'd love to see more dragons from you again sometime.

not me specifically, i'm practically perpetually broke, but the watermark kills it and i think some people would probably pay for a copy.

No need to be so patronizing about it. Β I don't like deviant arts printing system so use other means of selling prints. Β Deviant art is simply used to showcase stuff. Β

Just so you know, Volvagia is confirmed to be female.

Mad--Munchkin In reply to TheBlackNova [2012-09-21 19:36:29 +0000 UTC]

I would like to know where this is confirmed; everything I read either called Volvagia a male or an A-sexual creature; neither genders. Most dragons in Japanese mythology do not specify their genders, and since Volvagia is based on these dragons It would be up to the viewer to decide. I always thought of Volvagia as Male.

its one of the few theories stated in Hyrule Historia that I do support. but then again, HH is full of bull, all those elements are really up to the player and their imagination.

Mad--Munchkin In reply to TheBlackNova [2012-09-21 22:45:33 +0000 UTC]

so it's not been confirmed, it's simply a fan theory?

TheBlackNova In reply to Mad--Munchkin [2012-09-21 23:11:26 +0000 UTC]

just about any element that isnt stated in game is pretty much a fan theory in its entirety.

unless it's in the manga of course which is often considered the same canon as the games.
