Description
The Winter Solstice was probably the only good thing that came out of the Winter season. As she looked around the snow covered mountain top Sabrithylia couldn’t help but smile. She knew that down below the humans were getting ready for their main holiday of the season, but up with the Golds of Old were celebrating the longest night of the year with a party. Wine flowed freely, music was playing, and the dancers clapped their hands with joy.
Sab slowed down her walking as she neared Dionysus. Like always he was laughing and strumming his guitar as he danced around with the nymphs. Upon seeing her, he broke away from the group and placed a kiss on her forehead.
“Do my eyes deceive me or is Sabrithylia smiling during a Winter celebration?”
Giving the God of Wine and Celebration a shove, Sab shook her head.
“This is the only good thing that comes out of Winter and you know it!”

It was later on that night when Sab’s attention was drawn to the middle of the garden. Boreas was talking with Hera. The Queen Goddess laugh was as elegant as she was and drew attention to the pair. Sab caught the eye of her Mistress, Artemis, and made her way through the crowd to stand at her side. It was there that she was surprised to see Hecate herself as well in the small huddle.
The Dark Goddess turned and nodded her head in greeting as Sab approached.
“Artemis, dear, your servant is here.” Her voice was cool but not unpleasant.
Artemis smiled. “Hello love,” she leaned in to give Sab a hug.
“Artemis,” Sab embraced her Mistress and bowed her head in respect. “Hecate.”
“Once the celebration is over I believe Hecate has a small job for you, if you are willing to accept.” Artemis always gave her the choice to accept or decline jobs when it came to the other deities.
“It is nothing too harmful,” Hecate smiled said otherwise. “But it would be a great service to me and I would be very grateful indeed.”
Sabrithylia nodded her head and felt Artemis give her hand a squeeze of encouragement.
“I’ll help you.”
“Wonderful. I shall call for you when it is time.”

Hello everyone! So I made an entry to the contest already for Ziru which you can find here: Ziru's Gift: Fantasy Challenge Contest Entry
But I wanted to make one for Sab as well. Considering Christmas is a rather "new" holiday and my girl is based more or less around ancient Greece it was rather tricky to figure out what I wanted to do. The Greeks had several holidays based on the seasons and the Deities. It isn't confirmed if they celebrated the Winter Solstice or not, but I decided I would let them for this little scene.
I put in more than just Sab, so let me introduce everyone. Starting from the Left:
- Dionysus: Greek god of wine and pleasure, is one of the more mysterious characters in Greek mythology. Here he is dressed rather simply. I gave him a flower crown (the nymphs made it for him) and holding his cloak is a small grape pin.
- Sabrithylia: Our feisty Demi-Basilik. She is a servant/creation of Artemis.
- Hecate: The Goddess of magic, witchcraft, the night, moon, ghosts and necromancy. Hekate assisted Demeter in her search for Persephone, guiding her through the night with flaming torches. After the mother-daughter reunion became she Persephone's minister and companion in Hades.
- Boreas: The purple-winged god of the north wind, one of the four seasonal Anemoi (Wind-Gods). He was also the god of winter who swept down from the cold mountains of Thrake (Thrace), chilling the air with his icy breath. Beyond his mountain home lay Hyperborea, a mythical land of eternal spring untouched by the god's winds.
- Hera: Greek goddess of marriage, womanhood, and childbirth, was also known as queen of the gods. Her name literally means "lady", which could well be interpreted as "The Lady", since she was considered the alpha female of all the Greek goddesses. She was said to be one of the most beautiful - a trait that seems to have been of extremely high importance to the goddesses, but was also one of the most jealous and spiteful of anyone in Greek mythology.
- Artemis: The goddess of the moon and hunting. She also represented the female side of childbirth and chastity.
