Description And the Bullwolf growled "Just try and take her from me."

So here is the final product for Arkaden's Bullwolf contest. I painted it in watercolor ,and, it took me about 6 hours. I don't paint much ,so, most of the time I was experimenting with what the colors could do. I definitely learned allot.

This is really nice! I like the angle and the poses...and how you managed to get so much detail with watercolour. You have a good style, somewhat reminiscent of American comics, but still unique.

The colours do need improvement, though. The background is too bright...it kind of messes with the depth by making the background seem closer. Watercolours are always a pain to mix Um, I would recommend mixing complementary colours to tone things down a bit, or else mixing in black or brown [or doing a black or brown glaze layer underneath the darker/more neutral areas]

I definitely need to experiment with my colors more. Just lay them down on a blank page and see what happens without worrying about the finished product. I like your advice on doing a glaze first, gotta try that.

Thanks for the comments, real nice of ya.

(I admit, I do like comic stylings)

Did you ever take art and/or painting classes? Usually there's tons of colour theory charts. Which is a tedious pain in the ass, but it really does teach you a lot about colours and how the paints mix...Maybe just do a quick chart for colour mixing? It beats experimenting on good lineart.

That is the truth.

I never took any classes on art, only learn from what I read and threw experimenting. Plus all the advice I get from DA! That's been a huge help, and in just two months!

I'll skip all praising stuff(s)- you know that it is a great piece of work, and so do I.

Btw, original perspective.

Awesome on both accounts. it's really good. now i have to ask the other person about it though, don't I? i was hoping to add it in to my growing list of creatures. if i already had what i needed in other places i was going to turn it, and the whole situation, into a story battle.

Well, this is my interpretation of her character. Mine is more werewolf, hers more wolf. But she's real cool about it, just tell her that Mafeo sent you.

Fantastic perspective! I also like how the Bullwolf is holding her, trying to keep his claws away, as not to scratch her.

I would use black more to bring out the shadows and make look less over saturated other than that amazing work! ^^

yeah don't be the more you mix and try different colors the better you can use them. water color does suck in the way that it can run.but the less water you use th darker the colors will be and adding black is somthing water color artist do alot...but a small bit of black will go a long way lol

I love your choice of colours on this one. They really work well to contrast each other. However, I think the piece could use more layers of paint overall. It's just something to gauge when painting; colours tend to dry a lot lighter than they look when they are wet. It just takes some experience to really understand how your colours will act when wet and when dry.

I'd really like to see you try more in this medium.

Your got me. I need more experience with watercolors. Color in general. heh.
Thanks for taking out some time to comment, it really helps me to focus on what I need to improve on.
P.s. I love dwarfs too. They rock.

Great job. But next time you use watercolor, try to use a broader range of values (darker or lighter shades of the same color) especially on the plants.

Mafeo In reply to artistic-otaku [2008-08-30 00:46:21 +0000 UTC]

Great advice, thanks. It's funny, my brother said the same thing ,but, about the fur on the Bullwolf itself. I tried to keep the plants a muted tone so that the characters themselves "popped". Next time I'll try to add more depth.

Well done! Masterful use of color, and watercolor at that. Great job in a tough medium. This is going to be a tough contest indeed.
