Description Happy New Year! (It's a day late but shhhhh it's okay)

This was inspired by the #Leaveitin2012 tag on twitter that sprang up at one point or another. 2012 was an especially trying year for me - between a nasty breakup and taking a giant leap into college and figuring out who I am, it's been fun. And by fun I mean pretty tough.

I wanted to paint a peaceful picture based on letting go of the past. I usually don't do new years resolutions, but 2013 seems like a fresh start to me. In the center of the pic, I wrote a spiral of words - different things that happened to me or that I went through in 2012. You can't see them, they're way too light to read, but I know they're there.

As always, there's other little meaningful details in the pic but I won't give everything away!

Critiques much needed and much appreciated

I like the concept for this piece. It evokes a soft, peaceful emotion. I love a lot of the small details like the reflection in the water, the birds, and the shadow from where she is sitting. I am not a visual artist by any means but your technique looks polished and how you blended the colors helps give the feeling of serenity. This piece makes me want to go to Ireland where they have bluffs like this and soak in the sunsetting rays with a sea breeze in the air. I can nearly feel the wind, smell the sea, and hear the birds. It's a strong sensory piece. I couldn't believe this was created digitally. So cool and talented!

Woah, this is just beautiful. To me, it seems like it's a bright dream that awaits this young girl that came from a more gloomy past. The soft colors help emphasize that thought. The flowers next to her make it seem really upbeat and happy. And as I am listening to a song, a line came on that makes me think about this. "Shine On! Embrace me and deny me!" Not really the deny part, but I could see this piece being called Shine On!. It kind of has a "new beginning" kind of feel to it as well. Keep it up!

Oh, wonderful!! Thank you for your comment I'm so glad that the meaning I was trying to portray came across okay, and it's really cool how you picked up on a bunch of other details that were completely unintentional on my part. x) Thanks <3

(Okay this is my first formal critique really, so bear with me here.) Alright first off, I love that you decided to do something for the leaving behind of 2012. I think the concept is what really makes this piece and brings it to life; the story behind it and the subtle details (I see those sunflowers and that tattoo, gurl.) After reading your artists comments, and upon looking for all those little bits and pieces of meaningful detail, I really grew almost attached to the piece. It made me reflect on my own life, which I think is always a plus in art!
As for the composition, I really like the layout, though some of it looks a bit clunky. The rock/islands are nicely placed in proportion to the one that the girl is sitting on, but the cloud in between the two on the left side of the piece is kind of distracting. It seems to be just as strong as the rocks in shape and coloring and seems to be directly behind/in between them, which makes it look un-soft for a cloud. It kind of gives it a lack of depth, where in the rest of the painting (in the grass leading up to the girl, and the plant in the corner) there is a lot of depth! My suggestion would be to maybe change the shape of it or loosen the shading around its edges, something to make it look a bit more organic and soft c:
The colors. I really adore the way you color in general, and this piece is no exception. The orange is definitely what stands out here to me, and that being in the center, really gives the piece a warmer feeling, and one of hope (for a better year!) I almost feel like they could be a little less dark on the edges, but, that also brings more of the focus onto the center and the girl, so I think it can work either way here!
Also, as a last few little things, I love love love the texture of the grass, the sunflowers, and the way you painted the water!!
Overall, this is yet another magnificent artwork by you! c:
