Description This is the third of four forest landscape studies done in DAZ3D studio.

The focus was on the overall mood, light and shapes while optimizing the use of ressources, at best not exceeding the weight of one average DAZ character.
Also all forest landscapes should be merged into one set for easy combination and accessibility. The idea came during the work of another forest related piece where I ran into a couple of problems.
When Andrey79   published his new tree set at DAZ, I decided to rework my old forest base.

If you're interested in the setup - there is a journal to this landscape setup in the Creative Process series here:

Creative Process Part VIForest Scenery setup example - A little side track into the forest, so to speak.

Please note that you can find the other entries here:
As I wrote before, landscape is just another character in the image and there are similarities and differences to setting up a useful (i.e. reusable) and resource friendly scenery.
In this case I felt I had to update my trusty old forest set from Andrey, since it was not really optimized for Iray and it could become a bit heavy on render time. Since Andrey put out a new beautiful Fir tree set, I decide to create a new forest scenery.
Also I wanted to be able to reuse it for different kinds of forest, so I could economize on reusable parts, like backdrop, atmosphere, ground, camera setups and lighting, the latter arguably being the most time consuming.
There are a number of forest sets around, but I was not satisfied, especially Harpwood Trail which relies a bit too much on instancing for

I like it, too, and it was the first to be created and the one I needed for the scene. But I thought going to all the effort building the set should lead to something reusable

They're not even the high quality items. I used LOD3 and LOD2 versions. It's really a good set if you're in this kind of scenes. I hope Andrey does some deciduous trees like this set, too, someday.

I did overlook these! They must be pretty new, too. Still I wish there would be larger version, you simply can't scale deciduous trees as easily as needle stuff especially when they have branches all way down. That's what makes working with Flinks trees so difficult in resizing. They look weird.

You can show the type of deciduous tree that you need? I can try to collect it in the future.

The trees from your pack 3 are quite nice, but I feel they have the same problem that practically every deciduous tree for DAZ has, probably because it's difficult to model.

Here are some nice pictures of forests as example:  www.monaconatureencyclopedia.c…

There are trees of different ages there, but all share one similarity in a forest - they have to grow tall and high, even when young, to compete for light. There is kind of a breathing space beneath the crowns of, let's say at least 5 meters height.

If you take your pack:  www.daz3d.com/nature-trees-pac… you see that even with the big tree the crowns start a bit over the head of a person which leads to a strange, crammed feel to it.
(this goes for flinks trees, too)

Most trees for DAZ look either like saplings or average sized, park or meadow trees. They don't have that 'forest' feeling to it.

Your firs are an exception, and also the old trees in the old Forest Bundle of yours are still better than most, just they don't take well to Iray and large setups.

I tried to work around it here

but of course it only works, because you don't see the leaves of the tall trees which are distorted by the scaling. (Extremely horrible with Flinks trees)

So I would like to have some trees that are simply higher and maybe stronger in the trunk without the leaves and crown distorted. Maybe even some kind of morph would be enough.

On the good side - since the leaves are higher up, they don't have to be of top quality - LOD2 or even LOD 3 would probably completely enough.

In the picture above I did only use LOD2 & LOD3 - they were quite good enough. Often overall shape is more important than perfectly fine detail.

I don't know if this helps.

Andrey79 In reply to Magnus-Strindboem [2020-05-15 07:48:15 +0000 UTC]

Well, I roughly understood what you mean:
1) The trees must be tall.
2) The first large branches should begin above the character’s head, preferably at a height of 5 meters or more.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Magnus-Strindboem In reply to Andrey79 [2020-05-15 14:49:21 +0000 UTC]

Yes that's probably it.

Ideally one could size the lenght (up to the first branches) and thickness of the trunk independently of the crown. I think that would already help a lot.

I also feel that even a large crown has to let some light pass trough, so it should not be to dense.
Usually there is only one mayor sphere of leaves, at the perimeter. Even a closed forest roof should allow for decent lighting beneath the trees.
I usually add a lot of translucency and transparency to the leave shaders, but it's also dependent on the crown shape.

Flinks trees and most DAZ trees seem solitary - they have leaves all around, but in reality only trees in a free space look like this. They cast a lot of shadow, more than a forest tree.

In a forest, the side leaves would not get enough light for the tree to grow them.

Kibosh-1 In reply to Magnus-Strindboem [2020-05-10 01:05:56 +0000 UTC]

Do you mean because the lower branches scale up too large close to the ground and therefore look out-of scale to the rest of the scene?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Magnus-Strindboem In reply to Kibosh-1 [2020-05-10 02:13:09 +0000 UTC]

Yes... it pretty much ruins any attempt to rescale them. It actually works from some angles, but from the forest ground it looks awful. I've attempted to do this several times, but honestly gave up in frustration.
