Description THE FIRST TO GET REAL REF SHEETS

This is not to scale, Yudi would be a tad larger if it was.

So here we have Keffeu, the gentle ol' matriarch that's had a hand in raising every calf in the pod. Her children are Kavja and Houki, meaning her grandchildren are Zar and Etch.

Yudi is Keffeu's older brother. He's essentially the counterbalance to Keffeu's gentle patience. Yudi has a short fuse. Imagine him as being like Gordon Ramsay; sweet with kids but no patience with adults.

They've been virtually inseparable since their mother beached and died for reasons unknown back when Yudi was 12 and Keffeu was 7.

This is awesome! I like how you tend to pick more unusual species/populations for your characters, and your wonderful band of type Ds is no exception! They look real good, especially Yudi's sharp sword-like dorsal fin is spot on. Those type D's have crazy dorsal fins! Also, describing someone's personality using Gordon Ramsay as an analogy is incredible XD

Thank you! ;-; Type D "boxheads" are super fun to draw.
I totally love Gordon Ramsay, he's so great, and it was the best comparison I could come up with lmao

They definitely are! 'Boxheads' might just be one of the better descriptions of their peculiar faces I have heard. Some people compare them to pilot whales but I don't think that's really hitting the nail on the head... I so want to get into a real type D painting, ever since I learned of their existence. They're just exquisite. And seeing your characters actually got me thinking! So I was wondering, would it be okay if I made a piece featuring the two of them?

Also, I hardly ever see Gordon Ramsay in action (I mostly know him from his reputation lol) but I have seen how he is with kids which is amazing, plus his whole documentary on shark finning is A+. So that alone makes him an awesome man.

I agree! Pilot whales have similar-ish heads but they're not nearly the same. I think type D's are a bit more boxy.
YES of course you can use them!! WOW. I never noticed that you didn't do a type D painting. Type Ds are so fun do draw (in my experience anyway) with their nubby little faces. I can't wait to see what you come up with!

Okay I highly recommend you look up "hell's kitchen highlights" on youtube, he's a furious mofo, and the insults he uses are extraordinary. Especially how he can call someone a "fucking muppet" and make it sound legitimately scary.
I DIDN'T KNOW HE DID A DOC ON FINNING?? I must find it. He just keeps getting greater.

Here is his docu! www.youtube.com/watch?v=4SAkq6… It's called Shark Bait. Really, really good. And I think this is a prime example of where someone's harsh, unadulterated, swear-filled reactions to the things he sees actually adds a lot to it all. It's great. Oh and I'll be sure to check out his hell's kitchen highlights. He's definitely a very, very intimidating man when he wants to be.

I'd say pilots especially have a more bulbuous head. I know D's have very bulbous heads for an orca, but compared to pilots it's nothing. Pilots' mouths too are, like, 'underneath' their heads, while those of type d's still split the head 'in half' so to speak.
Hah, cool! Thank you for your permission I'd actually started thumbnailing already, but just wanted to make sure you were okay with it before it turned into an unpleasant surprise once I uploaded it. Fingers crossed I can actually finish it haha

Ohmy god I'm like 5 seconds in to the documentary and I'm misty eyed already, just hearing him talk about how beautiful they are. Oh my god.

That's a good way of putting it! I wish there were more pictures of type Ds, they're so cute.
No problem! I'm super excited just knowing that you wanted to draw my characters. Good luck!

Oh jeez yea that shit gets tough to watch, especially later on in the documentary as well. It's just such a mind-boggling practice. Have you watched the whole thing already?

I also went onto youtube and looked for some hell's kitchen highlights - as you probably noticed from my inspired comment lol. On the other hand, I did also have a search around for whether he's really such a salty sailor and apparently he's actually a really nice dude, it's just that on the american shows they wanna put in a lot more drama than on (e.g.) british shows. You probably knew that already, and it does make for some good laughs in hell's kitchen - but on the other hand I feel like appreciating the fact he's actually a pretty chill dude most of the time.

EXCEPT WHEN THAT FISH IS FUCKING RAW

also PS not sure if you have seen this one before but since you expressed your wishes for more type D pics - this is the coolest one out there imo. Big bull full body breach: 41.media.tumblr.com/0ffb365132… :0

Yeah, I watched the whole thing that day! I'm so impressed that he was willing to just march right up to people, get onto boats and go into stores. It gave me secondhand stress, lol. But he's a really admirable person, giving praise when deserved and giving hell when it's needed. I wish I could be more like that

Holy crap that picture It's all I need in life. Except I want M O R E. They're so beautiful with their weird heads and tiny eyepatches FRICK.

Oh gosh yes, whenever I watch documentaries like that I go a) wow what an amazing person for doing all this and b) i would NEVER dare do that myself. Though I guess having a team with you for support also helps a little, even if just to make you feel somewhat less vulnerable. Ramsay really did an amazing job on that documentary.

Haha yes it is STUNNING. A little addendum to the back of a type D orca ID catalogue from the crozet islands. Researchers have so many great pics that never see the light of day man...
