Gracie had been tending her nest for a number of weeks when she noticed some movement among the eggs. Sensing that the hatching was nigh, she rushed off to fetch a branch of berries to tenderize for the new arrivals.

In her absence, one egg in the middle of the clutch began to rock and roll about with great gusto. A shiny little beak broke the surface, and the squirming intensified. In the struggle to be free from the egg, the little hatchling writhed about all over the nest, pushing and shoving his yet unborn brothers and sisters this way and that. He battled with his eggshell, not paying any heed to the nestmates he was pushing around and out of the nest.

Upon her return, Gracie was shocked to see that her nest was almost entirely empty... Except for one round little baby chirping eagerly right in the center of the nest.
