Like the pose, the hands in particularly are rather expressive. Even if the proportions are off, your understanding of breaking things down into shapes seems okay.
People sketch in red (and blue!) pencil because you can edit out the red lines easily by adjusting the color channels in image editing software like Photoshop! It comes in handy for finishing up traditional art and means you don't have to spend as much time erasing sketch marks.

it gives the viewer a deeper view into the process and how something like a loose sketch can become something beautiful with time, effort, and skill
