Like the pose, the hands in particularly are rather expressive. Even if the proportions are off, your understanding of breaking things down into shapes seems okay.
People sketch in red (and blue!) pencil because you can edit out the red lines easily by adjusting the color channels in image editing software like Photoshop! It comes in handy for finishing up traditional art and means you don't have to spend as much time erasing sketch marks.

when you erase the sketch, sometimes the necessary form/shape of the object/character are lost!

i know! sometimes i erase the sketch and the dimention/shape just dies hahah
