Description Yes, they're officially called Praying...but they're atheist, you know, and they're more likely to prey.

Couldn't say which kind of insect I find most fascinating - mantids are definitely among the top ten.

Thanks for the fav...but careful, don't hit the fav button too often or people might get the impression you're not doing it because of the pics...

Took me a while to get a decent shot, the little fella tried to run off to less perfect backgrounds.

Nope, I don't have any praying mantisses at home, neither dead nor alive. Things in a jar...I've only got a pair of Gespenstschrecken and a Stabheuschrecke. plus dragonflies, spiders, wasps etc. but you know those anyway.

hehe.. that is what makes it so hard for me to give you a fav on every of your pics that deserves one!

hehe.. alive insects always do
spiders, ants, butterflies.. they are all the same in this matter

hm.. i thought you had a longish. hm.. i guess that was the stabheuschrecke then. i always mix them 2 up

marble911 In reply to BNW [2004-02-26 19:12:16 +0000 UTC]

That's the disadvantage when they are alive, yeah.

Must have been the Stabheuschrecke then. Or the male Gespenstschrecke. There is no really clearcut distinciton beetween those to. But mantids are clearly distinguishable from them by their "Fangbeine" and the triangular shape of the head.

hmm.. ok.. must have really mixed everything up

the stabheuschrecke had the longish feats so and my memory wasnt that clear so i thought you actually had this dude in the jar. never mind then!

If he had been dead when I met him he'd be in that jar now But unfortunately he was still very much alive and since I don't kill them...
I'll hopefully find a dead one one day.

BNW In reply to marble911 [2004-02-29 16:12:33 +0000 UTC]

hm.. my thought wasnt that you kill him. i know you dont kill em! i thought you just kept him in your garden and waited patiently til he went RIP.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

marble911 In reply to BNW [2004-02-29 16:15:09 +0000 UTC]

I lost track of him. Well in fact I removed him from the garden. They like it dry and my grandfather likes the grass very green so it would've been a bit wet for him.
It was a young one, not even fully grown at that time...didn't look like he'd go RIP soon.

maybe this year you will find a dead one
i wish you luck.. and if you want i can keep my eyes open for you

Would be cool if we found one. I'm sure the Fangbeine make wonderful macros. And the eyes...*wants mantis plus macro lenses*

i am sure we will find one. all we have to to is keep our eyes open
*wants his +10 lense now**makes typical G sound*

I know a place where there are usually loads of them in summer.

You can stop making that sound now that you've got your lense

Eichkogel near MΓΆdling (must go there in June/July).
Plus I've also found some on the field near the brook, but that involves about as much luck as finding them in front of the house. Eichkogel is better.

ok... so eichkogel june/july is a date. btw. that reminds me of the baby snakes.. now that it is may we should go the the prater au more regularly just looking out for them.. after all snake food seem to be around already

Yeah, we should. And I should also look for my Gelsenspray. My foot is still itching thanks to the bloody bloodsucker that sucked my blood yesterday...

BNW In reply to marble911 [2004-05-02 12:55:10 +0000 UTC]

gelsenspray is a good idea.. my left arm is also still itching too!

i would still like a photo of one of those lil bloodsuckers though.. maybe i should leave a patch unsprayed and take a pic.. then splat and then another

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

marble911 In reply to BNW [2004-05-02 18:28:35 +0000 UTC]

Don't think it works that way, the smell is pretty obvious, leaving patches unsprayed would probably not help a lot. But don't worry, it's not too effective anyway, so you might get a chance even with the spray on

DankeschΓΆn!

NatΓΌrlich gut getarnt.

I'll agree with you there... anything that starts eating its dinner while it's still alive is preeeeetty cool.

The other thing I like about mantids is their babies. They're sooooooooo gorgeous when they're little. And REALLY cool when they're big too.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

marble911 In reply to jaz999 [2003-09-20 07:49:57 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, mantis babies are gorgeous. We found a couple of egg cases with hatching mantis early this year. They're amazing - not much bigger than ants, but already got the typical head shape and front legs...

jaz999 In reply to marble911 [2003-09-22 10:09:17 +0000 UTC]

That's one thing I'm sad I've never seen; a hatching... Maybe one of these days... ah well, you can't see everything in life... I've seen snails hatching, but that's about it...

they're darn cute too when they're little... :}

Quite a good life goal...even though a bit limited.
But anyway, thanks very much. I couldn't get a green one. We've got green and brown varieties of the same species here, but I usually find the brown ones.

The underground? Either the wall of our house or the concrete ground...I took pics of it on both of them, so I'm not quite sure which one it is here, but I think it was the wall.

They are definitely my favorite and this one is a pretty little fellow. A little vain, I'd say, because this one is so blatantly posing for the camera...well, we can all be glad that it's not making love to it...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

marble911 In reply to greenfaery [2003-08-14 10:44:52 +0000 UTC]

Well, it's a male one, I suppose (rather small and thin)...that explains the vanity. And I don't think the camera would mind if he made love to her. It's usually the males who get eaten up, so that would mean free lunch for the cam...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

greenfaery In reply to marble911 [2003-08-14 10:53:06 +0000 UTC]

Ok, I didn't see it's a male one, so the camera is in no real danger if he starts making love to it. But a female one...
