A lot of artists draw them as ponies despite their actual forms being Hippocamps ('sea ponies', as you've called them), because it's what they're used to, it's easier, and cuter

If I recall a lot of the fan art for them as ponies is being based off of the toy boxes, which show a pony form of each of the dazzlings.

Β In the movie Twilight describes them as a race not ponies who took that form just cause of necklaces or anything like that. THIS is their form. You do know they also made a toy that is a daughter of Shining and Cadence. Haven't seen her yet either. The toys are just there to make money.Β
