West Germany in 1955-1956 ordered several thousand “Canadian” FN FALs with wood furniture. The FN FAL was a new weapon, but these were initially only intended to be used by the West German BGS Border Guards to give them modern firepower comparable to NATO forces occupying West Germany.

West Germany barely created its new army around this time and could not supply its soldiers with the FN FAL in massive numbers since it was still a new rifle. So the new West German Army was given surplus US M1 Garands while the “elite” and mobile BGS Border Guards were given the new FN FAL.

The reason for this was that the BGS was effectively the only armed “military" force in West Germany controlled by the West German government. The BGS was established barely in 1951 to guard the border with East Germany. The Bundeswehr, the successor to the disbanded Nazi controlled Wehrmacht, was only created in 1955 as the new German Army, and they only used US M1 Garand surplus rifles.

So in a way the BGS Border Guards was West Germany’s only army and they wanted to supply them with the best, most effective and modern weapons NATO had, in this case the new FN FAL - the FAL was called the “Right Arm of the Free World”

I encourage anyone to look things up though! FN FAL wasn't in service in the West German forces for very long, but it was there.

Welp, just an über-awesome art, what else can I say?
It actually reminded me of a Berlin Wall comic I wanted to make but eventually dumped the idea...

Got to agree with Madasajo92, the camo is a very good rendition of the BGS camo, great work!!!
As always the FAL is expertly drawn and coloured, a master piece!!!

Thanks for doing yet another picture! Loved how the camo patterned turned out here. You got it pretty accurate actually! And the FAL is exquisitely well done, holy shit. This is a pretty good look at a mix between the old camo used by the WWII Wehrmacht and the new uniform designs of Post-War West Germany. The Border Guards really looked the part of soldiers even if they really weren't lol

Nice work!

No me neither. Not the most interesting period in my opinion either. The occupation of Germany. Much less interesting than the Interbellum after WW1
