For the weapon itself I just looked at a bunch of references. Some from just typing "revolver" into google images, some from my own picture collection. The picture I came back to most frequently was probably this piece of Deus Ex: Human Revolution concept art.
The biggest hurdle is general art skill. If you know how to paint a metal pipe, it's pretty easy to apply that knowledge to a gun barrel for example. References can work as a bit of a crutch there, but if you know what you're doing, you're faster and less beholden to merely copying existing designs.
For this picture in particular I worked myself from right to left: First the profile shot because I figured that's where most of the interesting design aspects would be clearly visible. Then the front view to check for depth/thickness that the profile shot can't show. And lastly the 3/4 shot, which was pretty easy to proportion correctly because I could draw vertical guide lines from the previous two pictures.
