Description The SS United States is considered the fastest ocean liner to cross the Atlantic ocean in either direction. The ship had the most powerful steam turbines of any commercial vessel at the time, with a total power of 240,000 SHP. It was designed to be converted into a troopship if required by the US Navy during time of war. The top speed of the ship was once a military secret - often surmised to be 43 knots. On her July 3-7, 1952 maiden voyage, the United StatesΒ broke the eastbound transatlantic speed record by more than 10 hours. The United States also broke the westbound transatlantic speed record on the return voyage. The ship still holds the trophy to the present day.Β This a reworking of my earlier painting featuring the great ship.

I hope she at least gets fitted out again and put to use as some kind of a static cultural attraction.Β  There's no way it would be able to sustain itself in revenue service anymore.Β  It doesn't have enough stateroom space to compete with modern cruise ships and ocean liners, though it's fun to dream.

Lovely ship, although those funnels were seriously OTT.Β  Sad to see her rotting away.

I sailed on her in 1957. She was a GORGEOUS ship. Now she sits in Philly harbor gathering rust. Thank you for this painting of her in her glory days.

What a gorgeous painting of a beautiful ship.Β  Interesting thing about the United States: the only wood allowed onboard ship was the cutting board for the cook.Β  The designer of the ship was terrified of fire, and so everything had to be made of metal, preferably steel--even the piano.Β Β

She's still around, but sadly doesn't look quite as majestic anymore.
