Description Private commission, posted with permission .. pencil on A4 Bristol. The original reference was not chosen by me and it was taken on a mobile (sigh) A lot of artistic license was used to try to turn it into the best i could. Anyway, they loved it and that's what counts. I like the way she (Chantelle) is holding on tight to her great grandmothers hands. Updated after a couple of minor changes.

Thanks, it was as good as i could get it. Her mother loved it so i'm happy. I would have liked to have been able to do it better and will be working hard on that this year

The dreaded 'cellphone' reference!!! Either way Mark, you've managed to pull this particular commission off very successfully. . .well done my friend!

Very good job, espΓ©cially with a cell phone pic as a reference!
You very effectively pulled the view straight at the girl's face!

Thank you, it was hard because the hands are quite dominant as well but it balances itself out ok, i just need to rework the grannies chest area a little more, to give it a bit more structure

Thanks william, i need to work on it a little more. The granny could do with a bit more work, she looks a bit flat around the chest area, I did not see it until it was pointed out to me

ooh iΒ΄m sure u will improve what u need to improve
you use circulism tecnique on the skin, right? it is also apply on the clothes and another no-skin stuff??

markstewart In reply to willi-kun [2011-11-06 11:32:15 +0000 UTC]

Sometimes yes, it depends .. it is good for laying a foundation to build on like the first watercolour wash of a painting. After that it's all about creating the tone and texture which can be achieved by a variety of techniques. As a rule i will try not to blend my cloth textures to much unless it is a smooth fabric such as silk. The challenge is always about creating the illusion of texture, if it's a smooth texture then smooth your pencil strokes. If it's a rough texture then use rough pencil strokes On the baby drawing i chose to make the babies clothing as smooth as possible which adds to the look of softness associated with a babies clothing.

You did WHAT!?!! That's great and it worked very well! I did something a little (poco little) similar to that with a drawing recently. His whole head wasn't in the photo I was using so I got another photo and was able to figure out the top of his head (he was bald and it was for a commission).
Great job!

Very well done, now wonder they liked it a lot!
Her wondering expression is very well captured, the young vs old skin is very good and the clothes.. just amazing
May I ask what "artistic license" means?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

markstewart In reply to TarcDnB [2011-10-29 20:26:21 +0000 UTC]

Thank you, i mean i played around with the tones and lighting in places and did not follow the photograph too closely. As long as i got the likeness and elements of the drawing in place i changed a lot of the darks and lights. On the original photo the light just drowned out all form and tone so i sort of made it up

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

TarcDnB In reply to markstewart [2011-10-30 12:52:04 +0000 UTC]

Ohh I see! Well that's art and creativity right there ^^
You made it better than it was then, that's the way to go
