Description
This piece isn't finished yet but it's a concept i came up with off the top of my head while in a chat. I just started coming up with Dragon races and breeds because it's really fun. I recall seeing somewhere a dragon toy with a similar design but i haven't seen it in a long time and i dunno. Meanwhile, i have a quickly developing idea about their nature and culture in my head and got most off the basics in writing. :3

Here's what I wrote in the chat as i was thinking the Ocean King/Queen over (excuse the messiness):

The large, magical, great, wild dragons are in hiding. They still exist and are in no danger of extinction, but they're out there and few people know here they are. A couple stuck around up in the mountains.

The large sea going dragons have a few breeds of their own, i think. The most majectic would be the Ocean King or Ocean Queen, so called for its large size and large schools and beautiful, deceiving, appearance. They dwell deep and don't surfface often. They resemble lionfish with many spines and fins. Imagine the classic pictue of Nessie, then adda whole slew of fins come from that. Now with all that drag you wouldn't expect them to move much, but they do. They change colors in their skin like octopus, and retract their fins and spines into themselves and swim like ancient pleisiasaurs or something fierce and hunt deep water squids, fish, whatever large prey. Their moughts are blunts snouts filled with long sharp teeth. Theiy have deep "lungs" that breathe water only but they sing like whales. They are not masters of sound like our whales, they don't have echlocations. They hunt like sharks - electromagnetic sensors, long, sensitive lateral lines, etc. THey are fast and deadly but not brutish. They care for family and are fiercely protective of their pods. They travel in schools of up to a hundred members, maybe more.

Everyone hunts for themselves unless a relative is sick or something.

(im listening to Phantom of the Opera theme music while imagining the SIZE of the pods and seeing a whole army of these things in the water.)

THey look beautiful in the water, some have even developped glowing pigments and look like angels in the water. But then you get close and they go black. THe ocean gets dark and suddenly there's movement all around. A flash of long sharp teeth and yya'll is dead, honey.

Ocean Kings live to be 400 - 600 years. To humans it seems like they liive forever. THe avg lifespan is 400 years. They don't physically age until theyre spirits start to die. They "wash away" like everything else, slowly deteriorating. The way they breed is that they dun breed often and only give birth to one egg at a time. Perhaps a few die of old age every year but new ones are born and grown quickly every 2 years too. Not all the time, only when the mother is ready. THe males and females are the same size and equally decorated, both figuratively and literally.

They have gills in their chest, two gaping hols with flaps like an Octopus's gills/jets, that lead right to the large gills cavities they breathe in and out of. Like lungs with huge aft nostrils on the chest.

Um also, depending on what region you're in, they could be called Kings or Queens. This may change at some point but for now that's that.
