I'm not sure. *shrugs* Maybe because, in the good-ol-days, sixteen was the shit? I mean, girls could marry then they became sixteen, maybe even fourteen.
Maybe it was named that because a lot of kids got more freedom and such when they turned 16, so they started calling it 'sweet', because it was so sweet to be free~
