in any case, mush of german humor doesn't translate well. I know this from when i stayed there and i would watch German tv with my host family and understand the basics of what was going on, but i would never catch the jokes so i asked my host sister to explain them to me and they never really made sense...

To be fair, i tried to translate the "two cupcakes are in an oven..." joke to a couple of people and it didn't go over as well as i'd hoped.

I'd beg you to differentiate.
there's nothing like a "typical german" humour of course, and not everyone ca luagh about any jokes...there may even be the people who are as humourless as the stereotype says...
But the Anti-jokes still exist, you can't deny that.
As well as a lot of other Jokes, spetches and art, that relys on nonsense as a satirical or funny stylistic device. Look at Heinz Ehrhard, Kurt Schwitters or Christian Morgenstern.

I'm sure it is a cultural thing and has to do with the language, but isn't the German language and growing up with and the german culture, what makes someone "German"? I'd say so, but I'm not sure... other people certainly have another definition.
