Description “Kaye Listers: The Kings From the Beast”
Prints available: 10"x8" and 14"x11"
One of the core joys of the Beast Wars cartoon was listening to David Kaye's scenery-chewing, plot-hatching, story-driving Megatron – still one of the most memorable characters (and performances) from any TF media. As series have come and gone, Kaye has continued to do other characters, such as the Megatron from Armada, as well as the Optimus, Grimlock, and Lugnut from Animated. I've enjoyed all of his work, so when I found out he would be a guest at CybFest, a TF convention near me, I had to make something for the occasion.

As Strikerprime noted in the comments, it may SEEM as though I left out Prime Hardshell. But actually, in the moment after Megatron flies offscreen, Hardshell emerges from the darkness under the table and gives chase! Yeah, that's the ticket. And as for all the OTHER characters Kaye played, such as Robots In Disguise Hammerstrike and Slashmark, and Animated Warpath and Highbrow and... and... Well, I could only fit so many characters in, and what immediately jumped to mind was Grimlock eating his cards and Lugnut narrowing his eye at his, so I just ran with them. In retrospect, I might've done one representative from each continuity if I'd thought it through a bit more. Ah well! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It did! Made good sales, had a great time doing sketches, and got to chat with Kaye a bit. (He said his favorite part of the drawing was his portrait on the cards.)

Thank you! That was definitely a fun part of it. It worked out really well, I think, that BW Megatron's CGI look lent itself to a painterly style in the foreground, while everyone in the background is flat colors and hard outlines. Glad you dig it!

And Animated Highbrow, and RID Hammerstrike and Slashmark... but that would've been a really crowded table! In retrospect, it might've been better if I'd had each of the five characters represent a different series... but oh well, it's done and printed. On to other things!

I can totally see that little maniac just grabbing the coins and cards and zooming off. It's pretty dangerous for him since everyone else is big enough to just step on him. I also love how Grimlock is holding the cards in his mouth.

MattDrawsRobots In reply to shozurei [2019-07-23 03:26:40 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! Though in my head, he was the one who DEALT the cards in the first place. He knew that the identical hands would create an argument and give him the distraction he needed to bag up the coins and bolt.

Also, glad you dig Grim's card-holding method. I assume the reason there are only three is that they're tasty.

shozurei In reply to MattDrawsRobots [2019-07-23 03:31:22 +0000 UTC]

I didn't even notice they had the exact same cards. lol Armada Megatron is going to start shooting up the place trying to catch him, I bet. And he's the REASONABLE Megatron.

To Dinobots, I bet everything is tasty.

This looks utterly amazing overall. All of Kaye’s prominent TF characters playing Poker, and I love how the chips are all Golden Discs (and that BW Megatron is stealing all of them, more than fitting really). XD

Only other character missing from the Card table is TFP’s Hardshell, who was also voiced by David Kaye. He did voice a couple Cons in RiD15, but they’re not as prominent. Plus Hardshell spoke to TFP’s Megatron, voiced by the one and only Frank Welker. Which was like two Megatrons speaking to each other (at least to me). Hardshell may not have lasted long in the show, but that I feel is enough to get him a seat at the table. But that’s just me.

Phenomenal job on this! Great tribute to David Kaye and all the TF characters he’s voiced.

Thank you! Well spotted on the Golden Disks, and good point about Hardshell. But what you don't realize is that the moment after this, when Megatron is offscreen, Hardshell emerges from the darkness under the table and gives chase.

(Certainly I didn't just forget about him after doing the research for this piece, and then come up with an ad-hoc explanation when you called me on it just now. Definitely not that!)

Strikerprime In reply to MattDrawsRobots [2019-07-26 19:36:59 +0000 UTC]

Of course, you wouldn't. Otherwise, you'd be mighty foolish for forgetting an important detail like that as minor as it may seem. X3

But seriously though, joking aside, this still looks absolutely amazing and a great tribute to David Kaye's characters. With or without TFP Hardshell.

Thank you! In retrospect, Kaye actually did enough characters that I could've had the same number in the scene, but each one representing a different series. (He also voiced a couple in RID.) In theory I still could make a second edition and swap out Grimmy and Lugnut... but I've already had prints made and everything. so I think I'll move on. And people have been digging it enough as-is – such as yourself! I appreciate your kind words.

That was a particularly fun part of the drawing. Especially with everyone else being so flat-colored, that ridiculous Transmetal sheen was an amusing contrast.

Mediziner [2019-07-20 22:03:43 +0000 UTC]

This is a beautiful piece! I love all of the characters involved and I especially love how all of the characters were portrayed! David Kayes is also my favourite Transformers VA, and in my opinion I absolutely loved him as Megatron, the voice he gives him definitely gives our lovable antagonist the feeling of how truly evil he is! Sadly I've never watched Animated but I'm sure he played the Animated characters wonderfully. I think he still stands thus far as the only actor who's played both the Protagonist (Optimus Prime) and the Antagonist (Megatron) to boot too, I think. o: ...Unless another VA not yet known to me has also played as both Optimus and Megatron... XD

I've also seen David Kayes at the 2014 BotCon Convention, sadly never got to talk to him due to the BotCon staff saying that the voice actors weren't going to sign anymore autographs... :c But fortunately someone saved me and helped me get his autograph as well as the TFA artist's autograph since he was also there. But what especially crushed me was that the person who was kind enough to help me get his autograph said that he spoke in his Megatron voice AND I MISSED OUT ON IT!! DX I wanted to hear him speak in his Megatron voice for my own ears outside of recorded videos... Oh well. :c Still, it made me so happy to see him from afar and have his autograph.

Gotta especially love Transmetal Megatron running off with the poker coins (Chocolate coins?) and the card deck. XD All the cards are kings!

MattDrawsRobots In reply to Mediziner [2019-07-23 03:19:50 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! You're the only person so far who's said anything about the coins looking like chocolate. They're actually Golden Disks , but given the size difference between Beast Wars characters and other TFs, they would be coin-sized for most of them. I needed a see-through bag for Megatron to be carrying them in, so I decided as a joke to go with the mesh kind that chocolate coins come in. Well spotted!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Mediziner In reply to MattDrawsRobots [2019-07-23 03:24:54 +0000 UTC]

Np! XD Yeah as a kid, I'd always see chocolate coins in mesh bags like that, it was only when I realised that they're actually a multitude of Golden Disks... Whoops. XD David Kaye's voice as Megatron gives me the shivers, as in it gives me the feeling that this is an antagonist who will stop at nothing to see his enemies destroyed and his plans come to fruition... I love that about his acting as Megatron the most. ;u; The voice of power he puts in Megatron.

I forgot the concept of the Golden Disk, but then again I dunno if that was in BW1 (There's a Takara BW2 and NEO continuation hence why I said 1.) or if that's supposed to be in Beast Machines... :c But you're welcome. XD All the chocolate (Golden Disks) coins!
