Description Greetings, grapple fans! It’s time for another bout of orcish sumo wrestling, and tonight’s contenders are Mozgrog Broo, the green chap in the black mawashi, and Kumataikai, the burly bruin with the funny topknot. We join the action as Mozgrog discovers why it’s not especially clever to try and bearhug a bear.

This illustration is a sort of sequel to this one: [link] , in which my orc character Ogrokh took on Raijin the minotaur in a somewhat unconventional sumo match. Kazuma, the unfailingly excellent Japanese artist who created Raijin, very kindly drew me a picture of Ogrokh in return – and between us we decided to do another art trade featuring a couple of our characters bashing each other. The picture above was my half of that trade (as you’ll probably have gathered, Kumataikai is Kazuma’s creation and Mozgrog is mine), and if you’d like to see what Kazuma came up with, his outstandingly ace picture can be seen here: [link] .

For those interested in technical details, this piece was drawn in pen and coloured entirely with Karisma pencils, because at this point I still hadn’t learnt how to do proper lighting effects in Photoshop. I am a clot.

There may yet be further tussles between this bunch of rowdy reprobates, assuming that I can find (a) the time and (b) a new supply of white pencils. Don’t touch that dial, viewers!

Another smashing picture from matt, but I have one Question:How can there be cameras in Middle earth-as they call it-?!

MatthewSmith In reply to EHKiba [2007-04-14 13:02:03 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! And as for the unseen people taking pictures, they're not using cameras - instead they each have a Kodax, which is a tiny lizard with a photographic memory (literally) that can capture images in its brain and produce extremely lifelike paintings based on those images at a later date. If prodded appropriately they can emit light from their eyes to capture images in dark environments, hence the flashes in the background. Obvious, really. (No it isn't. - Everyone)

Cheers! I should probably do more coloured stuff, really, because it always tends to look better.

Are you kidding? Clot? Not! And away with your words about PS, this is great just as it is.

I remember Kazuma's pic too, outstanding work both of you

Many thanks for the kindly comments! And yes, Kazuma's half of the trade is fantastic - I'm still amazed at how great he made Ogrokh and Mozgrog look in a manga style.

You don't need Photoshop. The way you color now is pretty refined, and I've always enjoyed the sort of rim lighting on your characters. Throw in your technical skills and fun characters and declare yourself the winner. :3

I particularly like the way the spectators were handled, and Raijin and Ogrokh's expressions are just great. I always look forward to seeing your works.

Ta muchly! I was actually really pleased with the background - as I was drawing it I wasn't sure if it was going to work properly, but it all came together in the end. The camera flashes took *years*, mind you.
