When you're working with a depth of field like that you -are- going to have out of focus portions to the photograph.

There is a lot of dimension and depth in this photograph. The colours make up a perfect dissonance and the stairs railing detail adds a dash of mystery.
The angle is unusual, as though you are standing there yourself and staring at the ceiling. It's visually pleasing.
In my perception, blue stairs represent the sky and as I look at this picture I can see myself looking up towards the "sky". They say the sky is the limit when you wish to achieve something. The stairs represents the road filled with mysteries that leads to the very end, where the light is (bright spot at the end of the stairs).
All in all, this photo leaves a certain alice-in-wonderland'esqe feeling. It's magical.

Sorrowful scenes, from whence came a cry, louder than what anyone could fathom the depth of, then a nightmarish figure came, whose figure was as huge as the hair of a giant monstrous girl from the East, the lonesome ones also the ones who did nothing to flee, all perished... for once only, the second time they awoke, the lovely thoughts disappeared completely... Oh, my, the sky still remains a red one, the winds suck.

Beautifully exposed and composed. The textures of the paint give it character, while the angle of view gives it depth and body. I disagree that the slight blur around the edges is a problem, it's the nature of the lens used and gives the capture a signature look caused mainly by the effects of the "eye" you see through.
