Great!

I wasn't there at night.

Beautiful and romantic, and I really like the lighting by the ferris wheel.

wow, another nice shot.. i like the dreamy feel that the picture posses. probably you can take it a a diff angle? (though its nice the way it is...) also, nice use of thirds.... hmm... im not a pro photographer but i do keep in mind that to improve, you need to keep questioning yourself, "what if....?".
dont worry if people say you dont have enough technical skills, art is all about the message you want to convey. "the quality of an art piece is assessed by the amount of emotional stimulation it brings about, the number of people that can relate to it and the degree of their appreciation...

Haha yeah I know what you mean. Would been nicer if I'd had a tripod. Probably could've stopped the iso down a tad and had a cleaner picture.

That's not bad for lack of a tripod really.

Thanks. I guess the IS helped a lot too. From now on, if my camera comes out at night, so does my tripod.

That's a good philosophy. Oddly I only ever seem to use my tripod for studio shots, which is probably why I've never posted many outdoors ones, haha.

Are you working on getting a folio together then? I saw in your journal that you were starting to think about it for getting onto photography courses?

MattLew In reply to photoghost [2007-08-24 01:22:12 +0000 UTC]

I'm still thinking about getting into the course, but I might start to put together a folio just incase. How come you ask?

I wish I could do some studio shots...but I don't have a studio to work in.

Just showing an interest really, you already have a lot of good work alredy.

I don't have a studio. I make what I consider a studio, it consists of a black piece of card, a white piece of card, my tripod and a really bright light. this studio I can take anywhere and takes about two seconds to make. That's pretty much what I use for all my indoor photographs and I often take them at night to make use of controlled lighting. Hope that's useful

MattLew In reply to photoghost [2007-08-24 09:38:32 +0000 UTC]

Thanks.

You're studio is more of a studio than mine. I'd probably be too lazy to set one up. I'm more of a "shoot on location" person. If there's a studio on location, all the better.

photoghost In reply to MattLew [2007-08-24 10:29:22 +0000 UTC]

Too lazy to put something in front of a white piece of card? Or a black piece of card? Pffrt

I've always kind of assumed I don't know my camera well enough to shoot on location, I never seem to have time to sit down and remind myself what everything is. Plus often I can't be bothered to carry my dSLR, which is really bad I know :S

I did just take a roll of black and white film in to be developed since I don't have time to do it myself. I get really stingy when I use my film camera and it's taken me a year to use a roll of 36! That's such a diifference to the 126 photographs I took the other night, haha. When I start looking at my coparison project a bit more fully I do think that'll be something I'll talk about. Are we more wasteful with digital? Do quality shots become chance just because one can take many? Who knows. I know there's more to it than that, but it's definitely something I'd like to think about. What do you reckon?

MattLew In reply to photoghost [2007-08-24 10:50:21 +0000 UTC]

Yeah I'm interested in trying out film. My dad has a few old but very good SLR's. I carry my camera around everywhere...and today when I was walking around the city holding it I got a lot of people staring at it since it had a battery grip and lens hood. I was also trying to be "conservative" and only try to take shots I knew would be good, rather than rattle off frames. It kind of worked. I only took around 15 shots the whole day and only 2 were bad IMO.

photoghost In reply to MattLew [2007-08-24 11:16:45 +0000 UTC]

Yeah my SLR is about thirty years old but still works really well. I use it's lenses on my digital a lot. I usually carry a small camera with me, and now I've got a camera phone that about matches the quality of that one (:S) but I could never carry my dSLR everywhere. If I take it out I'm specifically expecting to be taking photographs. I'm sure I've missed out on a lot of opportunities there, but, I don't know, it's heavy, it cost me a lot of money which makes me very protective of it... I don't know. The film SLR is slightly smaller and I'd probably be more willing to take that, if I could afford the film

Still really impressive without a tripod! I always have a hard time filling up the frame with carnival rides. Good job, and excellent silhouetted
